Manchester Monarchs News Release
MANCHESTER, NH - Defenseman Jon Gleed scored his first goal of the season, the game-winner, as the Manchester Monarchs fell to the Bridgeport Sound Tigers, 2-1, in overtime at the Verizon Wireless Arena on Sunday afternoon.
Manchester (34-22-3-5) is in third place in the Atlantic Division with 76 points. Bridgeport (30-27-3-6) is in fifth place in the Atlantic Division with 69 points.
"Obviously we'd like to have the two points instead of the one," said Monarchs Head Coach Mark Morris. "I thought Bridgeport played a great game and they were very opportunistic. I was hoping our energy would be a lot higher than it was. We didn't play a bad game but we didn't play well enough to win."
After three periods of play, and with a tied score of 1-1, the Monarchs and Sound Tigers went into overtime. At the 1:41 mark, Bridgeport earned the win with Gleed's first goal of the season. With traffic built-up in front of Monarchs netminder Jonathan Bernier, Gleed deflected the puck into the net off a shot from left wing Trevor Smith who was stationed at the top of the left face-off circle. Center Mike Radja picked up an assist on the overtime goal.
Center Corey Elkins recorded his 19th goal of the season with 2:29 remaining in the first stanza. Elkins grabbed the puck from the behind the net where left wing David Meckler was battling for it with a Sound Tigers defenseman. The rookie center slid from behind the red line to the right face-off circle and fired the puck top shelf on Bridgeport's goaltender Nathan Lawson. Center Marc-Andre Cliche and Meckler earned assists on the play.
Bridgeport tied the score 1-1 with 25 seconds remaining in the second period with defenseman Jake Gannon's second goal of the season. Forward Matt Martin passed the puck up to Gannon who was skating up the right wing into the Monarchs zone. Undefended, he quickly set up his shot at the bottom of the right circle and blasted the puck that ricocheted off of Bernier's stick, then off the left goal post and into the net. Center Michael Haley also picked up an assist on the tying goal.
Bernier (26-17-5) took his 17th loss of the season with 28 saves on 30 shots. Lawson (13-12-3) earned his 13th win of the season with 26 saves on 27 shots.
Manchester went 0-for-1 on the power play. Bridgeport was 0-for-2 with the man advantage.
