Abbotsford Heat News Release
Abbotsford, BC - A late power play goal by Dan DaSilva lifted the Worcester Sharks past the Abbotsford Heat by a score 2-1 in AHL action Saturday night at the Abbotsford Entertainment & Sports Centre.
A scoreless first period saw the Sharks pepper Heat goalie David Shantz with 21 shots, while the Heat managed 12 shots on Sharks net minder Frank Doyle. The second period looked to be heading for the same scoreless conclusion until Dwight Helminen was sent in on a breakaway in the dying seconds of the second. Helminen finally beat Shantz on a backhander between the legs of the Heat keeper to open the scoring at 19:46 and the Sharks would take their 1-0 lead into the final period.
The Heat would pull even in the third on the power play when Jason Jaffray scooped a rebound past Doyle for his team leading 22nd goal of the year. Cam Cunning and Staffan Kronwall would collect assists on the tally to draw the Heat even with the Sharks, 1-1 at 8:31. However, Heat forward Shawn Weller would draw a double minor for high sticking at 14:38. Dan DaSilva was able to tip a point shot past Shantz for the game winning goal at 16:32 of the final period to give the Sharks the win.
The Heat are now tied for 2nd place in the North Division with the Rochester Americans and are now just four points up on fourth place Manitoba in the race to the Calder Cup playoffs.
