Toronto, Ont., March 7, 2010 - Defenseman Brendan Mikkelson's goal with 1.1 seconds left in overtime gave the Toronto Marlies a 3-2 win over the Hartford Wolf Pack Sunday at RICOH Coliseum.
Mikkelson accepted a pass from Ryan Hamilton and broke down the right-wing side in the Wolf Pack zone, before snapping a shot past the catching glove of Hartford goaltender Chad Johnson.
Donald Brashear had tied the game, with his first goal in a Wolf Pack uniform, at 7:38 of the third period, after the Wolf Pack had trailed 2-0.
The Wolf Pack gained a standings point for the fifth time in their last seven games (1-2-3-1), but are now 0-2-3-1 in their last six games, matching their longest winless streak of the season.
Mikkelson also had an assist in the game for Toronto, and Hamilton had a goal and an assist. Justin Hodgman also scored, and Kyle Calder chipped in two assists for the Marlies. Kris Newbury scored the other Wolf Pack goal, his first in two games with Hartford.
James Reimer made 22 saves to get the win in net for the Marlies. Johnson stopped 24 shots for the Wolf Pack.
The Wolf Pack were outshot 10-3 in the first period by a Marlie team that had been shut out in both of its previous two games, but survived without damage until there were only 43.7 seconds left in the session.
That was when Hamilton deflected Mikkelson's shot past Johnson for his ninth goal of the season.
Mikkelson took a pass from Alex Foster and was allowed to move in to the top of the right circle, and he fired just as Hamilton was moving in front of Johnson.
The Marlies made it 2-0 on a power play at 4:39 of the second, with Hodgman getting his sixth of the year. Johnson stopped Calder's shot from the right-wing circle but could not get totally set for Hodgman's rebound bid, which caught the top corner on the glove side.
The Wolf Pack power play then got Hartford on the board at 17:41, as Newbury, an ex-Marlie, one-timed Anders Eriksson's pass underneath Reimer from the left circle. The goal was Newbury's 12th of the season, and the assist was Eriksson's first point in two games since joining the Wolf Pack.
It remained 2-1 for Toronto until Brashear drove a 45-foot shot from above the left-wing circle past Reimer's stick side for the tie, set up by a feed from Derek Couture.
The Wolf Pack are now 26-27-6-5 on the year for 63 points, and remain in seventh place in the Atlantic Division. The Pack trail sixth-place Providence by three points and are six points behind fifth-place Bridgeport.
