Glads Topped in Shootout, 3-2

DULUTH, GA - The Gwinnett Gladiators dropped a 3-2 shootout decision to the Reading Royals on Saturday night at the Arena at Gwinnett Center in front of 5,775 fans. New Gladiator Mike Bartlett scored his first goal for the Glads to tie the game 2-2 in the third period. Royals forward Ryan Cruthers scored the winning goal in the shootout against to give Reading the second point.

Joey Haddad came out fighting for the puck early in the first period, forcing a turnover in his own end and weaving through the defense up the center of the ice for a shorthanded unassisted goal. It was Haddad's 30th goal in the ECHL and gave Gwinnett a 1-0 lead. Cruthers answered at 11:00 in the first with help from Chad Painchaud and Oliver Labelle. The score was tied 1-1 at the end of the first period.

The Royals Yannick Riendeau put a puck in the net just 27 seconds into the second period with Cruthers and Urban assisting. Reading led after two periods 2-1.

In the third period Bartlett cut to he middle and wristed a shot past Reading goalie Karel St. Laurent from the slot to tie the game at two at the 7:57 mark. Dallas Jackson and Brad Miller had the assists. Bartlett had just joined the Gladiators on Friday.

The Glads and Royals stayed even for the rest of the third period and overtime, which led to a shootout.

In the shootout, Nikita Kashirsky scored the only goal for the Glads, but Royals Riendeau and Cruthers beat Gwinnett goalie Marc Cheverie with Cruthers potting the winner, giving Reading the extra point.

Cheverie ended the night with 28 saves, while his counterpart St. Laurent baffled the Glads stopping 36 of 38. Gwinnett hit the post on three different occasions but St. Laurent made several big stops down the stretch to force overtime.

The Gladiators will take on the Toledo Walleye Sunday afternoon at 4:05 p.m. at the Arena at Gwinnett Center.
