Gladiators Weekly Update
January 4, 2010 - ECHL (ECHL)
Atlanta Gladiators News Release
New Leader: Pat Galivan, a 23-year-old rookie out of Western Michigan University, used a five-point week and a three-game goal streak to overtake Adam Berti as the team point leader. He currently has 29 points on 16 goals and 13 assists. He has six goals and four assists for 10 points in his last six games and is currently fifth among all league rookies.
Familiar Foes: The Gladiators began the season unbeaten in the first nine games against South Division rivals, going 7-0-1-1, but are just 5-5-1-1 in their past 12.
Special Teams: Despite going 1-17 in their last four games, the Gladiators continue to own the best power play unit in the American Conference, scoring 33 times in 164 man-advantages (20.1%).
Regulation Woes: The Gladiators have set a new season high of eight consecutive games without a regulation win, with their last coming in a 7-3 victory at Johnstown on December 12. They are just one non-regulation-win game short of tying the all-time team record of nine set in January of 2004.
Basement: The Gladiators remain in last place in the South Division with 34 points through 31 games, tied for the fewest games played in the league but are six points ahead of where they were in the standings at this point last season, when they owned a 12-15-4 record.
All Stars: rookie defensemen Drew Paris and Sam Roberts have been named 2009-10 ECHL All-Stars and will represent the Gladiators at the 2010 ECHL All-Star Game presented by Reebok Hockey and brought to you by Toyota and the City of Ontario and hosted by the Ontario Reign at Citizens Business Bank Arena in Ontario, California on January 20th. Roberts leads all rookie defensemen and is fourth overall among league defensemen with 21 points (7g-14a) in 31 games, while Paris is second only to Roberts among all rookie defensemen and is tied for eighth with 19 points (7g-12a) in 31 games.
Power: Forward Scott Mifsud currently sits tied for 7th with David Creievich, who played with Mobile from 1995-2000, in Mobile/Gwinnett history with 22 power play goals and needs just four more to move into a tie for 6th with Jim Jackson (2003-2009) and Jeff Campbell (2004-2008).
Last Week's Games:
December 29, Florida 4, Gwinnett 1 - L
Bryan Leitch scored twice in the first period, and the Florida Everblades never looked back, handing the Gladiators a 4-1 loss, yet another defeat on home ice. Brandon Buck and Kevin Baker each added goals for Florida in the second, and Pat Galivan scored on a penalty shot in the third period to spoil Mike Morrison's potential second shut out in three games. Gwinnett finished 0-5 on the power play, their second straight game without a power play. Florida finished 2-8 with the man-advantage, and improved to 16-12-2-3, while Gwinnett fell to 15-11-2-1.
January 2, Florida 5, Gwinnett 4 - SOL
The Gladiators got third period goals from Scott Marchesi and Jason Lawrence to force overtime and a shootout after trailing for much of the game, but Mike Morrison stopped all five Gladiator shooters, and Paul Healey lit the lamp for Florida, who beat the Gladiators for the second straight game. Pat Galivan finished with three points on a goal and two assists, while Jason Lawrence had two goals, and Scott Mifsud chipped in with two assists. The Gladiators went 1-7 on the power play, scoring with the man-advantage for the first time in three games. Danny Taylor made 34 saves in the shootout loss.
January 3, Charlotte 5, Gwinnett 2 - L
Charlotte opened the game with five straight goals from five different players through the first two periods of play before the Gladiators could get anything going, and the Gladiators lost in regulation in Charlotte for the first time all season. Pat Galivan scored his third goal in three games and Michael Forney added his third goal of the season late in the last period, but it wasn't enough to overcome the Checkers, and Gwinnett lost just their third road game in regulation this season. Danny Taylor only lasted about half the game, allowing four goals on 20 shots, and David Brown made 15 saves, allowing one goal in the final 29 minutes of play. Gwinnett finished 0-3 on the power play, and Charlotte went 1-2. Matt Francis had his first pro fight in the third period.
