Salmon Kings Streak Reaches 12 Games

Posting back-to-back wins at Alaska on Jan. 2 and 3, Victoria extended their winning streak to 12 games and their record in the last 13 games to 12-0-1.

The Salmon Kings conclude their three-game series at Alaska on Monday and then return home to host West Division leader Idaho on Friday and Saturday. The Salmon Kings have won their last four road games, one shy of the team record of five road wins in a row set Mar. 5-20, 1998 when the team played in Baton Rouge, La.

Victoria is 18-13-3 and in second place in the West Division with 39 points, nine points behind Idaho which is 23-9-2. The Salmon Kings have won their last 10 home games which is two shy of their team record set in 1988-89 when they played in Erie, Pa. and tied Dec. 9, 2008-Jan. 27, 2009.

The 12 games are the second-longest winning streak in the ECHL this season as South Carolina won 13 games from Nov. 24-Dec. 19. The Salmon Kings team record is 15 games from Dec. 6, 2008-Jan. 10, 2009 which is the second-longest winning streak in league history. The league record is 17 games by the Cincinnati Cyclones from Jan. 13-Feb. 29, 2008.

The 12-game streak ties the seventh-longest streak in league history set by Erie in 1989-90 and tied by Chesapeake (Feb. 14-Mar. 13, 1998), Florida (Dec. 14, 1999-Jan. 13, 2000), Wheeling Nailers (Feb. 20-Mar. 12, 2004), Pensacola Ice Pilots (Jan. 22-Feb. 18, 2005), Las Vegas Wranglers (Dec. 3-28, 2005) and South Carolina Stingrays (Nov. 28-Dec. 31, 2007).

During the winning streak, David Shantz is 9-0-0 with a shutout, two shootout wins, a goals-against average of 1.95 and a save percentage of .931 in his last 10 games while Glenn Fisher is 3-0-0. Shantz is 12-2-3 and leads the league with a save percentage of .924 while his two shutouts are tied for the league lead. He is second with a goals-against average of 2.36 while his 12 wins tie him for third.

Chad Painchaud (8g-9a) and Olivier Latendresse (6g-11a) lead the Salmon Kings during the streak with 17 points while Wes Goldie has 12 goals, including four game winners, and 15 points. Goldie has moved into a tie for the league lead with five game-winning goals and he is second with 19 goals. Painchaud leads the team and is tied for seventh in the league with 35 points (14g-21a) in 32 games while Latendresse is second on the team and tied for ninth in the league with 33 points (12g-21a) in 34 games.

Jimmy Sharrow of the Salmon Kings is tied for the league lead among defensemen with five power-play goals while his 21 points (7g-14a) in 28 games tie him for fifth.

The Salmon Kings have allowed only 30 goals during the streak and are fourth in the league with a goals-against average of 2.88. Victoria is 14-0-2 when leading after two periods.



New Year Begins With Higher Attendance



The ECHL enters the New Year averaging 4,187 per game which is up 7.5 percent from the first 12 weeks of last season.

The Premier 'AA' Hockey League has welcomed 1,381,827 fans for its first 330 games and reached one million fans faster than any season since 1999-2000.

The only minor professional hockey league to increase average attendance each of the last two seasons, the Premier 'AA' Hockey League has averaged more than 4,000 fans each of the last five seasons and 17 times in the last 19 years while drawing more than 3 million fans for 16 straight seasons.

Toledo continues to draw large crowds to the new Lucas County Arena and is averaging 5,753 per game which is third in the ECHL and up 46.5 percent from 2006-07 when the team played its last season in the Toledo Sports Arena. 


Five returning teams remain ahead of their average attendance from last year led by Cincinnati with 23.9 percent. The Cyclones led minor professional hockey with a 36 percent increase in 2007-08 and were second in 2008-09 with a 23 percent increase.

Elmira is averaging 3,775 per game which is 99.8 percent of capacity at First Arena and up 13.3 percent from last season. The Jackals lead the league with eight sellouts and they have had 27 sellouts since joining the ECHL including a league-leading 14 in their first season in 2007-08 and five a year ago which tied them for the league lead.

Ontario leads the league with 6,039 per game which is up 3.1 percent from their inaugural season in 2008-09 when they ranked second in the league with 5,856 per game.

Stockton is second with 6,006 per game after leading the league in attendance each of their first four seasons. The Thunder are trying to tie the league record of five seasons set by Florida from 2000-05. 


Gwinnett is fourth with 5,213 per game followed by Bakersfield with 5,154 per game, Florida with 5,043 and Charlotte with 5,035.


Alaska has raised its average attendance 2.6 percent to 4,805 while Utah's average is up to 3,679 per game.

American Conference - East Division

Elmira Jackals

* Elmira leads the league on the penalty kill with 86.1 percent (161-for-187).
* Justin Donati became first ECHL player to reach 50 points when he scored the first of two goals against Trenton on Jan. 1.
* Jackals host Florida on Friday and Saturday.

Johnstown Chiefs

* Johnstown held Cincinnati to one shot in the second period on Jan. 2.

* All-Star rookie Connor Shields led the Chiefs in December with 10 points (4g-6a).

* Chiefs host Kalamazoo on Wednesday and play at Wheeling on Saturday.

Reading Royals

* Reading is 5-1-0 in its last six road games and 11-7-2 overall in away games.
* Andrew Sarauer scored the game-winning goal and had three points (2g-1a) against Elmira on Jan 2.
* Royals host Cincinnati on Saturday and Florida on Sunday.

Trenton Devils

* Trenton is 2-0-0 and has scored 12 goals in its last two games including a season-high seven goals at Elmira on Jan. 1.
* Jack Combs has a four-game point streak (4g-3a) and five points (2g-3a) in his last two games.
* Devils play at Cincinnati on Wednesday and at Toledo on Friday and Saturday.

American Conference - North Division

Cincinnati Cyclones

* Cincinnati tied club record with seven consecutive road wins with 5-0 victory at Johnstown on Jan. 2.
* All-Star goaltender Jeremy Smith made 33 saves for his second shutout in 5-0 win at Johnstown on Jan. 2.
* Cyclones host Trenton on Wednesday and play at Wheeling on Friday and at Reading on Saturday.

Kalamazoo Wings
* Kalamazoo leads the league with 3.94 goals per game.
* Rick Cleaver has 10-game point streak (5g-10a), tying the team season high.
* K-Wings play at Johnstown on Wednesday and host Charlotte on Friday and Saturday.

Toledo Walleye
* Toledo is tied for the league lead with nine shorthand goals.
* J.C. Sawyer leads ECHL defensemen and the Walleye with 13 goals.
* Walleye host Trenton on Friday and Saturday and Charlotte on Sunday.

Wheeling Nailers

* Wheeling is 15-9-1 in its last 25 games after going 2-7-1 in their first 10 games.
* TJ Fox has a six-game point streak (7g-1a) and a three-game goal streak (4g).
* Nailers host Cincinnati on Friday and Johnstown on Saturday.

American Conference - South Division

Charlotte Checkers

* Charlotte is 12-1-4 when scoring first.
* Miika Wiikman has won his last three starts to improve to 6-0-2 with a shutout and a goals-against average of 2.36 in his last nine games.
* Checkers host South Carolina on Wednesday, play at Kalamazoo on Friday and Saturday and travel to Toledo on Sunday.

Florida Everblades
* Florida is third in the league on the penalty kill with 85.3 percent (174-for-204).
* Paul Healey had two points (1g-1a) in regulation and scored the decisive goal in the shootout at Gwinnett on Jan. 2.
* Everblades play at Elmira on Friday and Saturday before playing at Reading on Sunday.

Gwinnett Gladiators

* Gwinnett is 6-2-2 against the South Division.
* Pat Galivan is fifth in rookie scoring with 29 points (16g-13a) after recording four points (2g-2a) in his last two games.
* Gladiators host South Carolina on Friday and Saturday before playing at South Carolina on Sunday.

South Carolina Stingrays
* South Carolina is tied for first in power play on the road with 24.7 percent (19-for-77).
* Matt Fornataro has a 12-game point streak (9g-9a), tying him for the league season high.
* Stingrays play at Charlotte on Wednesday and at Gwinnett on Friday and Saturday before hosting Gwinnett on Sunday.

National Conference - West Division

Alaska Aces

* Scott Reid had 23 saves in first period, the most by a goaltender in the first period this season, in 6-3 win over Ontario on Dec. 31.
* Jason Ryznar has a four-game point streak (2g-2a).
* Aces host Victoria on Monday and Utah on Wednesday, Friday and Saturday.

Idaho Steelheads
* Idaho finished the regular season series versus Stockton with a record of 10-2-0.
* Matt McKnight has 15 points (7g-8a) in his last 14 games.
* Steelheads play at Victoria on Friday and Saturday.

Utah Grizzlies
* Utah leads the ECHL on the power play with 22 percent (39-for-177).
* Rookie Tony Romano has eight points (3g-5a) in his last six games.
* Grizzlies play at Alaska on Wednesday, Friday and Saturday.

Victoria Salmon Kings
* Victoria has scored nine power-play goals in the last nine games to go 23.1 percent (9-for-39).
* Olivier Latendresse has eight points (3g-5a) in his last six games.
* Salmon Kings play at Alaska on Monday and host Idaho on Friday and Saturday.

National Conference - Pacific Division

Bakersfield Condors

* Bakersfield set a team record by reaching 20 wins in 31 games.
* Stephane Goulet has a six-game point streak (5g-3a).
* Condors host Stockton on Friday and play at Stockton on Sunday.

Las Vegas Wranglers

* Wranglers are are 5-1-0 at home and 7-2-3 overall in one-goal games.
* Robbie Bina is third among league defensemen with 17 assists and is tied for third with 22 points in 23 games.
* Wranglers visit Ontario on Wednesday and host Ontario on Friday and Saturday.

Ontario Reign
* Ontario had league season-high 24 shots in the first period of 6-3 loss at Alaska on Dec. 31.
* Defenseman Shawn Germain has a three-game assist streak (4a) and a three-game point streak (0g-4a).
* Reign host Las Vegas on Wednesday and travel to Las Vegas on Friday and Saturday.

Stockton Thunder
* Stockton has scored 16 goals and is 3-1-0 in their last four games.
* Andrew Perugini is 7-6-2 and ranks second in the league with a save percentage of .919.
* Thunder play at Bakersfield on Friday before hosting Bakersfield on Sunday.
