Gladiators Make Major Moves Forward

September 8, 2009 - ECHL (ECHL)
Atlanta Gladiators News Release

Based on highly-touted personnel assignments expected by the tandem of NHL affiliations with the Atlanta Thrashers and Columbus Blue Jackets, the Gladiators announced today that they have made significant roster moves involving two high profile forwards.

Scott Mifsud rejoins the Gladiators after spending two seasons playing overseas. While in Gwinnett, Misfud proved to be an electrifying offensive threat as he scored 63 points in 71 games during the 2005-06 regular season, and added another 9 goals and 13 points in 17 playoff games as the Gladiators secured the American Conference Championship title. He would increase that total the following season with 68 assists and 94 points, and was an extremely important part of the Gladiators run to the Kelly Cup Finals.

Playing in the Swiss-B during 2007-08, Mifsud recorded 23 points on 12 goals and 11 assists in 20 games. Mifsud split the 2008-09 season between the Heilbronn Falcons of the 2nd Bundesliga, the Teir 2 professional German league, and Ritten Renon of the Italian league. He posted 10 goals and 17 assists for 27 points in 37 games between those two teams.

Head Coach Jeff Pyle commented on the return of Mifsud saying, "He is a character kid and good leader. We get a quality kid back. In the end, it was an easy decision."

Meanwhile, the Gladiators traded All-Star forward Jordan Fox to the Wheeling Nailers for considerations. The Kirkwood, Missouri native appeared in 68 regular season games for the Gladiators last season, ranking as the top-scorer by notching 29 goals and adding 38 assists for a total of 67 points. With Mifsud joining the team and the expected contributions from the Thrashers and Blue Jackets, it was likely that Fox would be placed as a third line center; a role that would not be productive for him or the Gladiators organization. Jeff Pyle said of Fox, "He's a good hard-working kid. His goal is to be in a position to get call-ups to the AHL. We wish him the best in the future."

The ECHL is the nation's premier 'AA' Hockey League featuring 20 teams from the U.S. and Canada. The League has drawn over four million fans each of the past 5 years and 11 times in the past 12 seasons.

The Gwinnett Gladiators open their 7th season in the ECHL on October 17th, 2009 against the Wheeling Nailers.

The Gladiators are the AA affiliate of the Atlanta Thrashers and Columbus Blue Jackets and play all home games at the spectacular 11,355-seat Arena at Gwinnett Center, located just off I-85 on Sugarloaf Parkway in Duluth, where parking is always free.
