Gladiators fly past 'Pilots, 4-1

Anthony Aquino scored the game-winning goal early in the third period while Chris Durno added an insurance goal for Gwinnett as the Gladiators shot down the Pensacola Ice Pilots, 4-1 on Friday night in front of 5,327 at the Arena at Gwinnett Center.

Peter Fregoe tipped Aaron Phillips snap-shot from the left point past Gladiators goaltender Trevor Prior to give the Ice Pilots a 1-0 lead, Kent Sauer also added an assist on the goal at 14:25 of the opening period.

Gwinnett tied the contest up two minutes later as Cam Brown flipped a rebound past Pensacola netminder Brian Eklund. Joe Bourne's wrist shot ricochetted off of Eklund's pad right to Brown to set up the goal. Kevin Doell also added an assist on the goal at 16:24 of the first period.

Following a penalty free opening stanza, Gwinnett and Pensacola were whistled for a combined 24 penalty minutes during a scoreless second period.

Anthony Aquino tallied the game wining goal 2:11 into the third period when he caught Eklund frozen against the far post and stuffed a wrap around into the Pensacola net. Tyler Deis and Brandon Dietrich added the assists on the goal.

Gwinnett added an insurance goal when Chris Durno took a centering pass from Kris Goodjohn and one-handed a shot past Eklund as he was being hauled down. Steve Slonina added an assist on the goal at 4:38 of the third period.

Steve Slonina iced the contest with an empty net, power play goal with 61 seconds remaining in contest. Shorthanded, Pensacola pulled Eklund in hopes of tying the contest up but could move the puck into the Gwinnett zone. Troy Milam added an assist on the goal.

Trevor Prior made 28 saves including some key stops in the second period to improve to 12-7-3 on the season.

The Greensboro Generals visit the Arena at Gwinnett Center tomorrow night for a 7:35 p.m. tilt. The Gladiators will be auctioning off their special St Patrick's Jerseys following the game to benefit local area charities.
