Gladiators Defeat Sea Wolves 8-1 In Game 3

DULUTH, Ga. – Gwinnett's Mike Stathopoulos and Kevin Doell scored two goals each to help propel the Gladiators to an 8-1 win over Mississippi, pushing the Sea Wolves to the brink of elimination by taking a 2 games to 1 lead in the best-of-five American Conference Quarterfinals, before 4,831 at the Arena at Gwinnett Center.

"That was a very disappointing effort," Mississippi coach Bob Woods said. "I am practically speechless. I'm having a hard time comprehending what happened tonight. The only positive is that we're not dead yet. I hope I have no quitters in my locker room."

Gwinnett (2-1) opened the score at the 12:29 mark of the first period. Chris Durno centered for Jeff Campbell, who was named to the All-ECHL Rookie Team, buried his first professional playoff goal in close beating Phil Sauve. Kris Goodjohn also garnered an assist.

The Gladiators made it 2-0 on a turnover at the Sea Wolves blue line. Stathopoulos went in and snapped home an unassisted marker for his second goal of the postseason at 2:25.

Gwinnett went ahead 3-0 at 14:46 of the middle period. Adam Smyth potted his first professional playoff goal letting go with a shot from the right circle. A helper was awarded to Lane Manson.

Stathopoulos netted his second unassisted goal of the period by stealing the puck inside the Mississippi zone at 18:53 and making it 4-0 for the Gladiators.

Mississippi (1-2) got on the board with one second remaining in the second period. Travis Lisabeth fired the puck past goaltender Adam Berkhoel. Referee Jamie Koharski signaled a goal just before the Gladiators net became dislodged. Nick Greenough picked up an assist.

In the third, Gwinnett scored four more. Gladiators made it 5-1 at 1:05 of the third. Durno scored with assists going to Andrew Oke and Campbell.

Doell notched an unassisted marker at the 4:11 mark. That goal sent Sauve to the bench in favor of goaltender Randy Petruk.

The Gladiators kept firing on all cyclinders. Kris Goodjohn, who led the Gladiators with 69 points during the regular season and was named the ECHL Sportsmanship Award winner, tallied his first of the playoffs at 18:18. Helpers went to Randy Dagenais and Jim Jackson.

With 1:15 remaining in regulation, the Gladiators finished off the scoring. Doell with his second of the night was set up by Campbell and Brad Schell.

Mississippi went 0-for-4 on the power play, while Gwinnett converted on 2-of-10 opportunities. Gladiators outshot the Sea Wolves 64-17.
