Gladiators Burnded by Inferno, 3-2

Matt Ulwelling scored a pair of goals, including the game winner, to help the visiting Columbia Inferno past the Gwinnett Gladiators 3-2 on Sunday night in front of 7,039 at the Arena at Gwinnett Center.

A defensive breakdown lead to the game's first goal. Matt Ulwelling flipped the puck off a Gladiators defenseman and walked into the slot before beating Gladiators netminder Sean Fields with a snap shot to the far post. Steve Burgess and Greg Amadio added the assists on the tally at 5:59 of the first period.

Jim Jackson tied the game at 1-1 early in the second period for Gwinnett. Six seconds into a Gladiators power play, the defenseman beat Columbia netminder Mike Minard from the blue line on a slap shot. Jeff Campbell and Brad Schell set up Jackson off the faceoff at 3:08 of the middle stanza for the assists.

Columbia regained the lead five minutes later on Bryson Busniuk's deflection. Chanse Fitzpatrick threw the puck at the front of the net were Busniuk got a stick on the puck and past Fields for the goal at 8:20 of the second period.

Another Gwinnett power play goal tied the game at 2-2. Mike Vigilante found the puck in a scrum in front of Minard and whacked the puck into the net for the power play goal. Brad Schell and Cam Brown each picked up assists on the goal at 6:06 of the third period.

Ulwelling's second goal of the night, short handed, proved to the game winner at 10:18 of the final period. Walker McDonald sprung Ulwelling on a breakaway and slipped the puck past Fields for the game winner.

Gwinnett tallied both goals in the loss on the power play while Fields made 29 saves for the Gladiators.

With the loss, Gwinnett falls to 15-7-4 on the season.
