Augusta Lynx News Release
Perhaps a holiday break was exactly what the doctor ordered as the Augusta Lynx returned from a weeklong layoff to outscore the Charlotte Checkers 5-4 at Cricket Arena in Charlotte on Sunday afternoon.
The Lynx wasted no time in opening up the scoring in the game, with Ken Magowan taking advantage of a bounce to put Augusta up 1-0. Louis Goulet picked up the assist, feeding Magowan at the Charlotte line and weaving in front to help create traffic on the marker at 5:15. Charlotte would come back with a pair to nab the lead from Dan Preston and Juris Stals, leaving the score at 2-1 through 20 minutes of play.
Finishing off a penalty kill to start the second stanza, the Lynx would put things in gear offensively when they notched three consecutive tallies to grab a 4-2 lead. Todd Bennett scored the first of two costly goals off Charlotte turnovers at 4:09, working a give-and-go with Louis Goulet to tie the game. Ken Magowan would drive the net to score his second goal of the contest at 6:53 from Mike Sandbeck and Bennett to give Augusta the lead back, poking home a rebound in front of Checkers' netminder Alex Westlund for a 3-2 edge. Another turnover at the Checkers' blue line allowed Jamie Johnson to set up Jim Shepherd at 9:49 and a 4-2 Lynx lead. Mike Harder scored a late power play goal to chop the lead in half at the intermission.
Augusta scored first again in the final frame, with Lawne Snyder driving the net to poke home the rebound from a Sean Connolly drive and make it a 5-3 game. Bennett would also collect an assist on the goal, his third point of the night at 8:39 of the third period. Kenton Smith's reply at 10:27 made for a tense finish to the game, including chances at the empty net for the Lynx with Westlund on the bench and the Checkers attempting to tie the game late, but no further scoring would occur and Augusta skated off with a 5-4 win.
Matus Kostur stopped 21 shots for the win, his third of the season, while Westlund stopped 23 in the loss. Augusta breaks a seven game losing skid to improve to 8-15-2 on the season, and will travel to Greenville to tackle the Grrrowl on Tuesday night. The club's next home game will be this Thursday night against South Carolina on Scooby Doo Night! Tickets are $10, $13, and $14, with discounts for students, seniors, military personnel, and Comcast cable subscribers! Call (706) 724-4ICE for more information, or to order your seats today!
