Atlanta Gladiators News Release

The Gwinnett Gladiators announced today that they have signed forward Scott Kelman and defenseman Jon Awe for the 2005-06 season.

Kelman is a first round selection, drafted 15th overall, in the 1999 NHL draft by the Phoenix Coyotes. In each of his first three professional seasons, the Winnipeg, Manitoba native has spent time in the American Hockey League with the San Antonio Rampage appearing in a combined 42 games posting 7 points.

"Scott is a big gritty centerman and a great faceoff guy," said Gladiators Head Coach Jeff Pyle. "He should be a good solid fit to fill in for Goodie (Kris Goodjohn) who is playing overseas while adding more size to our line up."

Last year, Kelman split time between the Laredo Bucks of the Central Hockey League, where he scored 14 goals and picked up 21 assists for 35 points in 47 games, and the San Antonio Rampage where he appeared in 24 games in the AHL.

A rookie out of Northeastern University, Awe comes to the Gladiators after completing his senior season where he appeared in a career high 36 games for the Huskies scoring 2 goals and 10 assists for 12 points.

"Jon is a solid defensive defenseman who moves the puck up ice very well," said Gladiators head coach Jeff Pyle "He will battle every shift and will fit well into our systems."

The Memphis, Tennessee native led Northeastern blueliners in scoring during his sophomore season with 2 goals and 11 assists for 13 points. Awe finished his collegiate career with a +11, plus/minus rating.
