GJ Holds on for 7-6 Win over Billings

July 20, 2018 - Pioneer League (PL)
Grand Junction Jackalopes News Release

Hunter Stovall's fourth home run of the season broke a 6-6 tie in the seventh inning and helped the Grand Junction Rockies to a 7-6 win over the Billings Mustangs Thursday night at Suplizio Field.

Through the first nine games of his professional career, Stovall is batting .447 with 11 extra base hits and 12 RBI.

After the Rockies took the lead, Jake Bird stranded two runners in the eighth, and Alexander Martinez tossed a 1-2-3 ninth for his seventh save on the year. He's already in a tie for fourth on the club's single-season save list.

The game was a back-and-forth slop fest at the start with the Mustangs scoring two unearned runs in the top of the first, and that continued in the bottom of the first as Will Golsan reached on a 3-base error, and Stovall's sacrifice fly got the Rockies on the board, and Coco Montes' fourth home run of the season tied it. The Rockies took advantage of another Mustangs error with two out in the inning, and Javier Guevara's 2-run single put the Rockies on top, though that lead didn't last long.

Bren Spillane's 2-run homer in the third tied the game and they added another run on Jay Schuyler sacrifice fly to take the lead, but the Rockies scored twice in the fourth to regain the lead, though Billings scored a run on a wild pitch to get the game tied.

Guevara and Cristopher Navarro had two hits for the Rockies, who improve to 16-17 on the season.

Eris Filpo allowed five runs, three earned over four frames, while the bullpen trio of Jared Skolnicki, Bird and Martinez held the Mustangs to one run over the game's final five innings.

Pabel Manzanero had three hits for the Mustangs, but they committed five errors and fall to 13-20.

Friday night, the Rockies will go for the sweep of the 3-game series with the Mustangs. The first pitch from Suplizio Field is set for 6:40.
