Funnville - The Richmond Flying Squirrels, Double-A affiliate of the San Francisco Giants, in conjunction with the Eastern League of Professional Baseball are excited to announce that Caleb Gindl has been selected as the Player of the Week for the period of August 13-19. Gindl batted .524 (11-for-21) with four doubles, one home run, six RBIs, two runs scored, three walks, and a .857 slugging percentage in six games last week to take home the honor.

Gindl becomes the second Flying Squirrels player to earn the honor this year. Flying Squirrels first baseman Jerry Sands took home the award for his strong performance during period of July 2-8. Gindl is in his second season with the Flying Squirrels and his second overall in the San Francisco Giants organization.

The Flying Squirrels outfielder has been selected as the Eastern League Player of the Week for the period of August 13--August 19. The 29-year old batted .524 (11-for-21) with four doubles, one home run, six RBIs, two runs scored, three walks, and a .857 slugging percentage in six games last week. Gindl, who is a native of Pensacola, Florida, had at least one hit in all six games he played in last week and had multiple hits in four of those games, including going 3-for-4 with two RBIs and one run scored in Richmond's 8-5 win in the second game of a doubleheader at Bowie on Tuesday night. The 5'7", 210 lb. slugger led all Eastern League hitters in slugging percentage (.857) and OPS (1.440) last week and tied for the league lead in hits (11) and doubles (4). He also finished ranked among the weekly leaders in on-base percentage (.583-2nd), batting average (.524-tied 2nd), total bases (18-tied 2nd), and RBIs (6-tied 5th). Caleb, who is hitting .306 with 14 doubles, three homers, 24 RBIs, and 21 runs scored in 54 games with the Flying Squirrels this season, was signed by the San Francisco Giants as a free agent on July 16, 2017. He was originally selected by Milwaukee in the 5th round of the 2007 draft out of Pace High School in Florida and he also previously played in the Toronto organization.

Additionally, Bowie left-handed pitcher Keegan Akin, has been selected as the Eastern League Pitcher of the Week for the period of August 13th-August 19th. The 6'0", 225 lb. hurler started a pair of games for the Baysox last week and had a record of 2-0 with 13 strikeouts and a 1.46 ERA. Akin, who is a native of Alma, Michigan, made his first start of the week on Tuesday in the opening game of a doubleheader against the visiting Richmond Flying Squirrels and earned the win in Bowie's 10-2 victory. He gave up two runs on four hits while striking out seven batters and walking two over 5.2 innings of work. Akin made his second start of the week on Sunday at Erie and fired 6.2 shutout innings in Bowie's 3-1 win. He scattered four hits while striking out six batters to improve his record to 14-6 on the season and lower his league-best ERA to 2.77. The 23-year old led all Eastern League pitchers in inning pitched (12.1) last week and tied for the league lead in wins (2). He also finished ranked among the weekly leaders in strikeouts (13-3rd). Keegan, who is rated by MLB.com as the 12th best prospect in the Baltimore organization, was selected by the Baltimore Orioles in the second round of the 2016 draft out of Western Michigan University.
