Giants Win 6-2, Kane Sets Record

March 5, 2009 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Vancouver Giants News Release

VANCOUVER BC - Evander Kane scored two goals, establishing a new single season record for goals with 44 on the season, as the first place Vancouver Giants trounced the second place Tri City Americans 6-2 at the Pacific Coliseum on Wednesday night.

Kane opened the scoring just over a minute in, sweeping a loose puck past Americans goalie Drew Owsley. The Vancouver forward was able to break the record late in the second period on a Giants four on three power play. After Craig Schira sprung Kane and Casey Pierro-Zabotel on a two on one break, Kane was able to shoot on net and then follow up by jamming the loose puck in past Owsley.

Alex Rodgers was given credit for maybe the strangest goal of the season, as he dumped the puck into the Americans zone and then skated to the bench on a line change. Then the unthinkable happened, as the two Tri City defenders collided in the Americans goal crease. As one of the defenders fell, he pushed the puck past the stunned goalie Owsley and into the net. Rodgers gets credit for the goal, even though he was sitting on the bench when it went in!

Adam Basford, Casey Pierro-Zabotel and Bronson Maschmeyer also scored for the G-Men, while Tyson Sexsmith picked up the win to move the Giants to 55-7-1-3 for 114 points on the season.

The Giants can now look to Friday and a first place showdown with the Calgary Hitmen. Calgary currently leads the Giants by just two points, but the Giants hold three games in hand over the Eastern Conference leaders.

You can catch every minute of the big game on AM 650 and also on SHAW TV! The WHITE SPOT GIANTS pre game show will start at 7 pm, live from the Pacific Dining Lounge with Brook Ward and Steve Ewen. Dave Sheldon and Steve will have the call at 7:30 pm on the radio and in the building on 88.7 FM, while Dan Russell and Bill Wilms will have the game live on SHAW.
