Vancouver Giants News Release

The Vancouver Giants enter the Western Hockey League holiday break as the hottest team in the Western Conference. Riding a five-game winning streak, the Giants are now two points out of first place in the conference as well as the B.C. Division.

Last Friday, the Giants pulled off one of their greatest comebacks in franchise history in a 4-3 overtime win over the visiting Swift Current Broncos. Trailing 3-0 in the third period, the Giants got a power play goal from Mitch Bartley to start their annual Teddy Bear Toss. Spencer Machacek scored a pair to force the game to overtime while Cody Franson notched the winning goal 25 seconds into the extra period. The Giants out-shot the Broncos 48-19 in what turned out to be Vancouver's first win this season when they trailed a game going into the third period.

Saturday, goaltender Dustin Slade needed to make just 13 saves to collect his fifth shut-out of the year in a Giants 5-0 win over the Portland Winterhawks. The Giants, who were scoreless again going into the third period, got goals from Bartley, J.D. Watt, Kyle Lamb, Tim Kraus, and Mario Bliznak. Vancouver scored once on the power play, extending their power-play goal-scoring streak to 15 straight games.

The Giants are now 23-8-0-4, good enough for 50 points. They are two points back of the Kootenay Ice and have three games in hand on their Cranbrook rivals. Vancouver will not be back on the ice until December 27 when they are on the road to play the Red Deer Rebels. That will start a stretch of five games in six nights through the WHL's Central Division.

On behalf of everyone in the Giants organization, have a wonderful holiday season and best wishes in 2006!
