Vancouver Giants News Release

The Vancouver Giants are closing in on another franchise milestone as the team enters the final week of the Western Hockey League regular season.

Last Wednesday, the Giants recorded their 12th shut-out of the season in a 6-0 win over the Portland Winterhawks at the Rose Garden. The fourth line of John Flatters (1g,2a), Garet Hunt (1g,1a), and Mitch Czibere (1g,1a) combined for seven points while Mitch Bartley scored his 30th goal of they year. Goaltender Dustin Slade recorded his second straight and WHL-leading 11th shut-out on a night which saw Vancouver set a franchise record for shots-on-goal, out-shooting the Hawks 50-16. The Giants also finished off their season series against Portland with a perfect 5-0-0-0 record, out-scoring their opponents 25-3!

On Friday, Gilbert Brule scored a pair of goals to lead Vancouver to a 3-2 win over the visiting Kamloops Blazers. Brule is now the sixth player on the Giants line-up to score 20 or more goals on the season. Paul Albers tallied his 13th power play goal of the year on a night which saw more than 11,000 fans on hand for Cam Neely Night.

Saturday, Vancouver dropped a 5-3 decision to the Blazers in Kamloops. Michal Repik snapped an eight-game scoring drought with his 24th goal of the campaign. It was the only regulation loss the Giants suffered to Kamloops this year (4-1-0-2) and it was the first time in 23 regular season games that the Blazers beat Vancouver in regulation!

The Giants remain in top spot in the WHL's B.C. Division and Western Conference with a record of 46-18-0-6. They are two points shy of hitting 100 for the first time in club history as they prepare for the final weekend of the regular season. Friday March 17, the Giants play their final home game of the year against the Kelowna Rockets (7:30pm). That game features the Giants annual Fan Appreciation Night at the Pacific Coliseum. On Saturday March 18, the Giants travel south to take on the Everett Silvertips (7:05pm).
