San Jose, CA - In the first of six straight games between two division leaders, the San Jose Giants bested the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes on Tuesday night at Excite Ballpark, winning by a final of 9-5 to end Rancho's three-game winning streak.

The game was closely contested all night, with the Giants getting a two-run triple and a run-scoring single with two outs in the last of the eighth to break open what was a one-run game for most of the night.

Trailing 6-5, Quakes' reliever Carlos Alejo looked like he'd get the Quakes to the ninth with just a one-run deficit. But with two outs, Carter Williams tripled home a pair of runs, then scored on an RBI single by Abdiel Layer to make it 9-5.

The Quakes got a big game from Brandon Lewis offensively, as he led off the scoring with a first-inning homer, his team-leading ninth. With the Quakes down 6-4 in the seventh, Lewis struck again with another big hit, this time it was an RBI single to bring home Ismael Alcantara, bringing Rancho to within a run at 6-5.

Rancho reliever Julian Smith (2-4) got hit with the loss, as he allowed the tying run and go-ahead runs to score in the fifth, giving San Jose a 5-4 advantage.

San Jose reliever Austin Reich (3-0) pitched 2.2 innings of scoreless relief to notch the win for the Giants.

Alcantara, Diego Cartaya and Sam McWilliams matched Lewis with two hits each.

Quakes' starter Robbie Peto struggled through 2.2 innings, as he allowed two runs on three hits, but also walked five hitters.

Rancho (23-19) will look to get back on track on Wednesday, as they'll send Jimmy Lewis (0-2) to the mound against San Jose's Wil Jensen (3-0). Game time will be 6:30pm on Wednesday night from Excite Ballpark.

On Tuesday, July 6th, the Quakes return to LoanMart Field for another Temblores Tuesday. Tickets are available at rcquakes.com.
