Stockton Ports News Release

STOCKTON, Calif. - The Stockton Ports still haven't figured out the San Jose Giants in 2016. San Jose won its eighth straight over Stockton on Tuesday night, defeating the Ports by a final of 12-5 and scoring seven runs over the final two innings.

The Giants plated a run in the bottom of the first on an RBI groundout by Jonah Arenado, taking advantage of a strikeout wild pitch that started the inning and a passed ball that ensued. Stockton answered back in the bottom of the first as John Nogowski doubled with two outs and Joe Bennie followed with his second home run in as many games to give the Ports a 2-1 lead.

San Jose tied and then took the lead for good in the third. With one out, Steven Duggar homered to right. It marked the first home run of the season allowed by Ports starter Heath Fillmyer (3-2). C.J. Hinojosa followed with an infield single and scored two batters later on an RBI double by Jose Vizcaino, Jr. to give the Giants the lead for good at 3-2.

Fillmyer was knocked out of the game in the fifth. With two outs, Vizcaino walked and scored on an ensuing double by Aramis Garcia to make it a 4-2 contest. Fillmyer suffered the loss, going 4.2 innings and allowing four runs (two earned) on six hits while striking out a career-high eight.

Giants starter Martin Agosta (2-0) gave up a leadoff single to Jose Brizuela in the fifth followed by a double to James Harris on which Brizuela tried to score but was thrown out on a relay play at home. Harris would score on an ensuing fielding error committed by the third baseman Vizcaino to bring the Ports to within a run at 4-3.

Agosta would complete the fifth inning for the Giants and go on to earn the win, allowing three runs on five hits while striking out one.

Cody Stull took over for Fillmyer and recorded the final out of the fifth. In the sixth, Stull gave up back-to-back singles to Brandon Butler and Christian Paulino to start the inning. Butler would score on a sac-fly by Ronnie Jebavy to get the Giants lead back to two runs at 5-3. It was the only run allowed by Stull in two-and-a-third innings of work.

Rob Huber took over for Stull in the eighth and would face all nine batters in the frame as the Giants pulled away. With two on and nobody out, Jebavy dropped a bunt down that was fielded by Huber, who threw wild to first base and allowed Butler to score to make it 6-3. Three batters later with the bases loaded and one out, Jonah Arenado hit a two-run double to left. Two batters later, Garcia hit a two-run single to left to bring the Giants lead up to 10-3.

Huber allowed five runs (two earned) on four hits in his lone inning of work.

Nogowski, who was the designated hitter in the game, was summoned to pitch the ninth and allowed two runs on two hits, including an RBI double to Hinojosa.

After two scoreless innings from Jose Reyes and a scoreless frame from Reyes Moronta, Jeff Soptic took over in the ninth and gave up a pair of runs on three hits, including an RBI single to Harris and a fielder's choice groundout to Mercedes that drove in a run to make it 12-5. Soptic would strike out Nogowski to close out the ballgame.

The Ports and Giants play the middle game of their three-game set on Wednesday night at Banner Island Ballpark. Casey Meisner (0-5, 4.41 ERA) gets the start for Stockton, opposed by San Jose right-hander Sam Coonrod (2-1, 1.32 ERA). First pitch is set for 7:10 p.m. PDT.
