Rancho Cucamonga Quakes News Release
Lake Elsinore, CA - It took ten innings, but the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes continued their road dominance on Tuesday night, scoring a 4-2 win over the Lake Elsinore Storm at The Diamond in Lake Elsinore.
Held to just one hit through nine innings, the Quakes took advantage of two wild pitches and Lake Elsinore's fifth error of the night in the tenth, as they combined that with two hits of their own to tally a pair of runs to earn the win, improving to 2-0 in extras this year.
Johan Mieses drove home the go-ahead run, when he singled home Michael Ahmed to give Rancho a 3-2 lead over Storm reliever Brad Wieck. The Quakes got an insurance run later in the inning, as Wieck (2-1) uncorked his second wild pitch of the inning, scoring Pin-Chieh Chen for a 4-2 advantage.
Philip Pfeifer (1-0), who worked three perfect innings to notch the win, gave way to Karch Kowalczyk in the tenth. Kowalczyk earned his fourth save in five chances this year, sealing Rancho's sixth road win in their last seven games to improve to 14-4 on the road in 2016.
Rancho Cucamonga scored the game's first runs in the second inning off of a couple Lake Elsinore errors. Julian Leon led off the inning with a walk, and Yusniel Diaz hit a ground ball to second base. Second baseman Josh VanMeter's throw was off the mark at first base, allowing Leon to get to third with Diaz taking second base. Michael Ahmed then hit a sacrifice fly to center field to score Leon, but center fielder, Franchy Cordero's throw back into the infield went into the Storm dugout, allowing Diaz to score as well on the error. That made it 2-0 Quakes after two innings.
After Quakes starter Josh Sborz was cruising along through four, Lake Elsinore got on the board in the fifth. On the first pitch of the inning, Luis Tejada rifled Sborz's offering over the left field fence, a solo shot and his third home run of the season to cut the Quakes' lead in half, 2-1.
The Storm tied the game in the sixth, as Franchy Cordero tripled home Javier Guerra, evening the game at 2-2 against Sborz.
The Quakes (27-12) take over first place all alone with the win, thanks to High Desert's loss at home on Tuesday night. On Wednesday, Rancho will send Andrew Sopko (4-0) to the mound against Lake Elsinore's Brett Kennedy (0-1), with first pitch scheduled for 6:05pm.
?On Friday night, 1,500 fans will take home a Corey Seager Bobblehead, thanks to Allstar KIA. Dodgers' rehabbing left-hander Hyun-Jin Ryu is expected to start Friday's opener. Game time is 7:05pm and tickets are available at (909) 481-5000 or online at rcquakes.com.
