SAN JOSE, CA - Giants pitchers Phil Bickford, Pat Young and Tyler Cyr combined on a one-hit shutout in a 5-0 series-opening victory over the Bakersfield Blaze on Monday evening at Municipal Stadium. The contest was scoreless until San Jose (41-33) erupted for four runs in the bottom of the seventh to take control of the game.

Bickford pitched the first five innings for the Giants and allowed just a bunt single. The right-hander walked three and struck out seven. Pat Young (5-1) was credited with the win after tossing scoreless sixth and seventh innings out of the bullpen. Young did not allow a hit while striking out three. Cyr then worked two perfect innings with a pair of strikeouts to finish the game. The trio combined for 12 strikeouts in the win.

Steven Duggar (3-for-4, 2B, RBI) had three hits to lead the San Jose offensive attack. Chris Shaw (1-for-4, RBI) broke the scoreless tie with an RBI single while Ty Ross (1-for-2, 2 RBI) delivered a key two-run single later in the seventh.

The only inning in which the Blaze advanced a runner past first base was the top of the second. Bickford issued a leadoff walk to Jay Baum before striking out the next two hitters. Tyler Marlette then walked with two down advancing Baum to second, but Bickford recovered to strikeout Joe DeCarlo to end the inning.

Aaron Barbosa's leadoff bunt single in the top of the third was Bakersfield's only hit of the night. Following the single, Bickford quickly retired the next three batters to retire the side. Bickford then breezed through a 1-2-3 fourth before pitching around a two-out walk in the fifth. The San Jose starter struck out two in his final inning of work. Bickford threw 89 pitches during his five-inning performance.

Young had little difficultly working through his two innings of relief. The right-hander walked Chantz Mack with one out in the top of the sixth, but induced Baum to line out to shortstop before Austin Wilson struck out. Young then fanned two in a perfect seventh inning.

Meanwhile, Tyler Herb surrendered just one hit over six scoreless innings for the Blaze to begin his start. Duggar's single to begin the bottom of the fourth was the only Giants hit over the first six frames.

San Jose finally broke though against Herb in the bottom of the seventh. Duggar led off with a single up the middle before C.J Hinojosa reached on an infield single to deep shortstop. Shaw was up next and he bounced a single up the middle plating Duggar with the first run of the contest. Jonah Arenado then grounded a single into left to bring home Hinojosa to make it 2-0. After Jose Vizcaino, Jr. popped out, Cristian Paulino singled to right to load the bases. Ross then capped the seventh-inning scoring with a single through the hole on the right side. The hit scored Shaw and Arenado for a 4-0 advantage.

After Cyr cruised through a 1-2-3 top of the eighth, the Giants added to their lead with a run in the bottom of the inning. With one out, Ronnie Jebavy walked and then stole second. Duggar followed with a fly ball RBI double down the left field line to make it 5-0.

In the top of the ninth, Cyr set down Mack on a groundout, struck out Baum and retired Wilson on a fly out to center completing the shutout.

Herb (7-3) was saddled with the loss after he was charged with four runs (all earned) on seven hits over 6 2/3 innings. The All-Star right-hander walked one and struck out seven.

Notes:

* The shutout was San Jose's third of the season. The one hit allowed was the fewest surrendered by the Giants in a game this year (previous low: three hits).

* Bakersfield's 11-game road winning streak was snapped. It was their first road loss since May 23.
