Rancho Cucamonga Quakes News Release
Visalia, California - The Rancho Cucamonga Quakes dropped game one against the Visalia Rawhide at Recreation Park in Visalia on Monday, losing 9-4.
Dodgers pitcher and major league rehabber Brandon McCarthy started for the Quakes as he works his way back from reconstructive elbow surgery.
McCarthy pitched five innings, and allowed four runs (three earned) on seven hits, striking out three. He threw 72 pitches (56 strikes). It was his fourth rehab start and his third with Rancho Cucamonga.
The Quakes committed three errors tonight, leading to an unearned run on McCarthy's line in the first inning. Domingo Leyba singled with one out, and stole second base. However, Quakes catcher Julian Leon's throw went into center field, allowing Leyba to take third and eventually scored on a Marty Herum sacrifice fly.
The Rawhide scored again in the second off of McCarthy, after Chuck Taylor and Victor Reyes hit back-to-back singled. Taylor later scored on an RBI groundout by Robelys Reyes.
Rancho Cucamonga tied the game at 2-2 in the fourth inning, after Matt Beaty doubled home both Tim Locastro and Joey Curletta, who both singled.
After Beaty tied the game, the Rawhide offense took over and ran away with the game one win. Marty Herum led off the fourth inning with a single, and eventually came around to score after McCarthy uncorked a wild pitch. Chuck Taylor hit a solo home run in the fifth, and Dawel Lugo hit a two-run home run in the sixth inning, and, also in the sixth, a Victor Reyes hit an RBI double made it 7-2 Rawhide.
The only other offense for the Quakes came from Leon, who clubbed a two-run home run in the seventh inning to give Rancho their third and fourth runs of the night.
McCarthy (0-1) took the loss for Rancho Cucamonga. Quakes reliever Adam Bray was roughed up for four hits and three runs (two earned) in his inning of work, with Chris Anderson and David Reid-Foley each allowing a run in one inning pitched.
The win goes to Visalia's Brad Keller (6-4). Keller pitched 6.1 innings and allowed four earned runs on seven hits, while striking out seven. The Rawhide bullpen was perfect as Gabe Speier pitched 1.2 innings of scoreless ball, and Miller Diaz tossed a scoreless inning.
With the loss, the Quakes drop to 2-3 in the second half, while the Rawhide improve to 2-3. The Quakes road trip continues tomorrow from Visalia as RHP Andrew Sopko (7-1) will start for Rancho against Visalia's RHP Joel Payamps (2-0). First pitch is at 7:00 p.m. from Recreation Park.
