Bickford, Giants Silence Blaze

June 28, 2016 - California League (CalL1)
Bakersfield Blaze News Release

Phil Bickford has made two starts with the San Jose Giants this season.

If he continues to pitch like has this year, his stay with the Giants will be a short-lived.

Bickford struck out seven batters, surrendered just one hit and no runs in five innings as the Giants snapped the Blaze three-game winning streak on Monday night, 5-0.

Bickford matched All Star pitcher Tyler Herb (L, 7-3) for five frames before he exited with the game still in doubt.

With no score in the seventh inning and Herb puzzling the opposition, San Jose's offense speared through.

Steven Duggar led things off with a single only to be followed by consecutive hits by C.J. Hinojosa, Chris Shaw, and Jonah Arenado to give the Giants a 2-0 advantage.

With neither offense able to get in gear, Herb finally blinked and San Jose pounced on the rare opportunity.

Ty Ross's two-run single into right field extended the lead to 4-0 and chased Herb from the game.

Prior to the seventh, Herb had given up one measly hit and struck out seven batters before San Jose tagged him for four runs off of six hits.

On this night one run would've been enough for San Jose as Bickford, Pat Young (W, 5-1), and Tyler Cyr combined for the one-hit shutout.

Aaron Barbosa's bunt single up the third base line in the third inning was the only scratch against on an otherwise impressive performance by the Giants pitching staff.

With the loss, Bakersfield has their 11-game road winning streak snapped along with seeing the hitting streaks of Gianfranco Wawoe (16) and Chantz Mack (11) come to an end.

Giants and Blaze continue their series with Game 2 on Tuesday evening at 7:00pm. David Gascon will have the call on TuneIn Radio and BakersfieldBlaze.com.
