Stockton Ports News Release
STOCKTON, Calif. - The Stockton Ports saw an early scoring opportunity fall by the wayside in the first inning on Tuesday night, and as it would turn out there wouldn't be many more of them. The San Jose Giants got a two-run homer from Daniel Carbonell in the fifth and an additional run in the seventh that was enough to beat the Ports by a count of 3-0 as the Giants handed the Ports their 10th shutout loss of the season.
Brett Vertigan opened the bottom of the first inning with a double and Melvin Mercedes followed with a sacrifice bunt that advanced Vertigan to third with one out. San Jose starter and Elk Grove native Jordan Johnson (2-1), however, got Yairo Munoz to strike out and Jake Nottingham to ground out to end the inning.
Ports starter Dylan Covey (6-8), making his first start since coming off the DL after being truck in the face by a line drive on August 8th, pitched around leadoff doubles in the second and third innings and a one-out single in the fourth to keep the Giants off the board through four frames.
In the fifth, with one on and two out, Covey surrendered a two-run homer to Carbonell out to left field that gave the Giants a 2-0 lead and signaled the end of Covey's outing.
Covey would suffer the loss, going 4.2 innings and allowing two runs on six hits while matching a career-high with eight strikeouts.
After Sam Bragg pitched a scoreless inning-and-a-third, Joel Seddon came on to pitch the seventh and, with runners at the corners and two outs, uncorked a wild pitch that allowed Jeff Kobernus to score the third and final Giants run of the ballgame.
Meanwhile, Johnson pitched around leadoff singles in the second and fourth innings and a two-out single by Michael Soto in the fifth. After a perfect sixth and with one out in the seventh, Johnson allowed a single to Nottingham and a double to Tyler Marincov that put runners at second and third with one out. Ian Gardeck was summoned from the Giants bullpen and, after getting B.J. Boyd to ground out to the mound, he walked Soto to load the bases with two outs. Trent Gilbert would come to the plate and pop out to shortstop to end the inning and the threat.
Johnson earned the win, going 6.1 innings and allowing six hits while striking out six. Gardeck went on to pitch a perfect eighth inning. Jake Smith (SV, 11), entered to pitch the ninth and set the side down in order while recording a pair of strikeouts to notch his 11th save of the season.
Carlos Nava pitched a scoreless eighth inning in his California League debut while Ben Bracewell pitched a perfect ninth for the Ports.
The Ports and Giants play the rubber match of their three-game series on Wednesday night at Banner Island Ballpark. Left-hander Matt Stalcup (2-3, 3.03 ERA) makes the start for Stockton, opposed by San Jose right-hander Jason Forjet (4-4, 3.39 ERA). First pitch is set for 7:10 p.m. PDT.
