Rancho Cucamonga Quakes News Release
RANCHO CUCAMONGA, CA - Rancho Cucamonga had its five-game winning streak come to an end, falling 4-0 against High Desert at LoanMart Field on Tuesday night.
The Mavericks (28-22, 65-55) grabbed the early upper-hand against Quakes' starter Pablo Fernandez (2-1). With two outs in the first inning, Joe Jackson clubbed a solo homer over the right field fence for his ninth of the season. Royce Bolinger continued the rally with a single to right. Ronald Guzman walked, placing runners at first and second. Kevin Torres singled up the middle, plating Bolinger for a 2-0 lead.
High Desert added another run against Fernandez in the second. Tripp Martin stroked a leadoff double to left field and advanced to third on a Seth Spivey groundout. Alberto Triunfel delivered a sacrifice fly to center field, chasing Martin home for a 3-0 advantage.
The South Division leaders padded the margin against Fernandez in the fifth. Jackson doubled to right field and came home on Bolinger's bloop single to right, making it a 4-0 contest.
Fernandez, the Cuban-born right-hander who was signed by the Dodgers to a minor league deal in March, lasted five innings. He allowed four runs, nine hits and a walk while suffering his first loss in a Quakes' uniform.
Rancho Cucamonga (27-24, 68-53) failed to generate any offense against Mavericks' starter Richelson Pena (10-8). The right-hander tossed six scoreless innings, scattering four hits and a walk while striking out seven. Pena moves into a tie for the California League lead with his tenth victory of the year.
High Desert's bullpen took care of the rest in dealing the Quakes their ninth shutout loss of the season. Felix Carvallo pitched two scoreless frames, while John Fasola worked around a two-out single in the ninth inning to preserve the win.
One of the bright spots offensively for Rancho Cucamonga was newcomer Willie Calhoun, who joined the Quakes from Low-A Great Lakes earlier in the day. The 20-year-old went 2-for-3 with a single, double and walk in his California League debut.
The Quakes' bullpen also pitched effectively against the Mavericks. A.J. Vanegas tossed two scoreless innings to lower his season ERA to 1.91. Rob Rogers allowed a hit and struck out one in his lone inning of work, while Karch Kowalzcyk retired the side in order during the ninth inning.
With the loss, Rancho Cucamonga slips a game-and-a-half behind High Desert for first place in the South Division second-half standings. Their nine shutout losses are tied for the second-most in the California League this season.
The Quakes will try to earn a series win against the Mavericks in the finale of the three-game set on Wednesday night. Rancho Cucamonga will send right-hander Chase De Jong (3-2, 2.91 ERA) to the mound, while High Desert counters with right-hander Reed Garrett (5-4, 5.65 ERA). First pitch at LoanMart Field is scheduled for 7:05 pm. If you can't make it to the ballpark, you can follow all the action on FOX Sports 1350 AM, beginning with the LoanMart Pregame Show at 6:50.
