Idaho Falls Chukars News Release

The Casper Ghosts didn't wait long to jump out on top of the Idaho Falls Chukars in grand fashion Saturday night, as first baseman Harold Riggins' 1st inning grand slam to right field gave the Ghosts a lead the wouldn't relinquish in a 7-4 Chukars loss at Mike Lansing Field.

The Chukars actually jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first when second baseman Luis Piterson doubled and came home on an RBI groundout from Dean Espy, but Riggins quickly stole the momentum back for the Ghosts with his opposite field slam.

The Ghosts wouldn't let up either as they added another run in the second on a solo home run by center fielder David Kandilas and two more unearned runs in the sixth to push their lead to 7-1.

That would be all Ghosts starter Geoff Parker would need, as the right-hander held to Chukars to just one run on three hits over his six innings pitched. Parker (3-5) would earn the win while walking just one and striking out six.

The Chukars would make a small rally in the seventh inning, scoring three runs on four hits to make the score 7-4. Third baseman Mark Threlkeld started the frame with a single followed by back-to-back doubles from catcher Edul Escobar and Chris Elder to plate the first two runs. Elder would eventually come in on a double play to end the scoring.

For the second straight night normally reliable Chukars starting pitcher was roughed up by the Casper offense. This time it was southpaw Brennon Martin (2-4), who earned the loss while giving up five runs on 10 hits over his five innings pitched.

With the loss the Chukars (2-5) are now four games back of the first place Ghosts (6-1). The two teams will meet again Sunday afternoon at 1:05 p.m. for game three of their four-game series.
