September 9, 2003 - Canadian Football League (CFL)
B.C. Lions News Release
VANCOUVER, B.C â September 9, 2003 â Last Saturday in Regina, BC Lions slotback Geroy Simon became the first Lion to surpass the 1,000-yard receiving milestone since the 2000 season.
Lions wide receiver Alfred Jackson accomplished the feat when he finished the 2000 season with 59 receptions for 1,119 yards. The Lions went on to win the Grey Cup over Montreal that year. The last slotback to surpass 1,000 receiving yards was Mike Trevathan back in 1996. Trevathan finished that year with 65 receptions for 1,006 yards.
Entering this Saturday's game against the Edmonton Eskimos, Simon already has 58 receptions for 1,004 yards with seven games remaining in the season. He has averaged over 91 yards during the first 11 games thus far, and is on pace to reach 1,642 yards at the conclusion of the season. If Simon were to continue this remarkable pace it would place him third on the Lions all-time yards receiving list. Only slotback Darren Flutie, who caught 111 receptions for 1,731 yards in 1994 and wide receiver Mervyn Fernandez, who hauled in 95 receptions for 1,727 yards in 1985 would be ahead of Simon on the Lions single-season receiving yards list.
The BC Lions are celebrating their 50th season in the CFL. For over five decades the BC Lions are the only professional sports team in Vancouver to have provided entertainment for fans in the heart of the city. For tickets information call 604-589-ROAR or log onto bclions.com.
