Oshawa Generals News Release
Belleville, ON - November 27th, 2011 - Oshawa wrapped up their weekend road trip in Belleville on Sunday afternoon. The journey down the 401 didn't go according to plan: the Bulls won 4-1 in front of 2,332 fans at the Yardmen Arena. Generals goaltender, Daniel Altshuller made a commendable 45 saves in the loss.
Daniel Altshuller started in goal for the Generals and established a strong net-presence early when he thwarted a Luke Judson wraparound attempt. The Oshawa goaltender dealt with a high volume of crease traffic throughout the opening frame and battled to make a series of difficult saves on shots from the tops of the circles.
Jordan Subban had a stellar first period for the Bulls assisting on both of Belleville's goals in the opening twenty. Belleville found the back of the net less than two minutes in: Carter Sandlak cut across the front of the net at full tilt and received a pass that put him in all alone. Sandlak's backhand goal was the end result of a passing play started by a lovely Subban pass in the neutral zone.
Belleville added to their lead on the power play when Subban's off-speed shot from the point was deflected by Austen Brassard in front of Altshuller.
Despite not scoring on Belleville goaltender, Malcolm Subban, good signs for the Gens included strong physical play, an attribute exemplified by Josh Graves when he plastered Brassard into the boards. Christian Thomas showed an incredible commitment to team defence when he skated full stride into the Generals zone and broke up a dangerous 2-on-1 late in the frame. Scott Laughton looked lethal in the final minutes of the first wheeling a backhand on Subban, but heading into the second, the Generals were trailing Belleville 2-0.
In the second, Oshawa's offence stepped out of the shadows re-discovering the sense of urgency needed to beat Belleville's net-minder. Thomas rang in the new period by stinging Subban with a one-timer from just beyond the crease. Peter Hermenegildo continued the trend blasting a point shot that Subban turned aside with a lightning quick right pad.
But Oshawa kept coming, and at 7:45, their diligence was finally rewarded on the power play. Thomas threw a swing pass into the middle ice that Captain Boone Jenner one-touched through Subban's five-hole giving the Generals life on the scoreboard.
Unfortunately, Oshawa's fine second period was deflated when Michael Curtis scored from close range with just over one minute remaining. Down 3-1, the Generals had their work cut out for them in the third.
The Generals showed their mettle when they killed off a Belleville power play at the start of the final period. Oshawa's offence did its best to generate chances, but Malcolm Subban provided Belleville with the bedrock that they needed to carry out their game plan. Subban made a full splits, full extension glove save on Daniel Maggio look routine late in the third which was pretty indicative of how Oshawa's afternoon went. Brendan Gaunce put the final nail in the coffin when he scored on the power play amidst a mad scramble at 11:23. At the final buzzer, Oshawa found themselves on the wrong end of a 4-1 score.
The Generals return home this Friday December 2nd, to take on the Sarnia Sting at the General Motors Centre. Start time is 7:35 PM, and it's the 14th annual Teddy Bear Toss. Bring a bear, toss a teddy, and make a family's Christmas one to remember!
