Storm 3 Slip by Majors 3-2

November 27, 2011 - Ontario Hockey League (OHL)
Mississauga St. Michael's Majors News Release

For the second time in as many tries this weekend, the Mississauga St. Michael's Majors came up just one goal short of picking up some points.

Brock McGinn had a goal and an assist, including the game-winner, as the Guelph Storm hung on for a 3-2 win over the Majors in Ontario Hockey League play Grey Cup Sunday at the Hershey Centre.

Stephen Gaskin and Hunter Garlent scored the other goals and Toronto Maple Leafs prospect Garrett Sparks made 21 saves as the Storm won its second straight game while the Majors dropped their second one-goal decision of the weekend.

"These are lost points that may really come back to hurt us in the long run," Mississauga General Manager/Coach James Boyd said. "We are close but not getting two points from weekend games with the standings so tight is not good.

"We need to show the same urgency we showed in the late going for longer stretches if we're going to get some wins. And we made a couple of defensive lapses and that really hurt us as well."

Mika Partanen and Riley Brace with his 17th of the season scored the goals for the Majors, while JP Anderson made 26 saves in goal as the Majors were out-shot 29-23, including 12-4 in the second period.

Gaskin opened the scoring for the Storm with the lone goal of the opening period at 10:52, but the Majors carried the play in the last few minutes of the opening frame to out-shoot the Storm 11-9.

When Partanen scored on the power play at 9:20 of the second period, the Majors were back even and right in the game. But the Storm had the last six shots of the second period and one of them went in, as Garlent's goal at 18:26 made it 2-1 Guelph after 40 minutes of play.

"Those kind of lapses are really costly," Boyd added. "That gives a team that is playing its third game in 2 1/2 days some life and gets them motivated."

McGinn's goal at 12:44 of the third period turned out to be the game-winner as Brace scored at 18:14 to set up a frantic final two minutes.

Mississauga got a power play chance moments later but couldn't connect with Anderson on the bench for an extra attacker to slip to 12-11-1-3, still seventh in the Eastern Conference standings.

Guelph (12-9-1-3) picked up a win just a day after upsetting the highly-regarded Plymouth Whalers at home. The Storm failed to score in five power play chances while the Majors were 1-for-6 with the extra man.

Majors are now off until Friday night when they travel to Kitchener to take on the always tough Rangers at 7:30 p.m. Next home game is Sunday, December 4 at 2 p.m. when they face the Ottawa 67's at the Hershey Centre.

Tickets for all home games are available at www.ticketmaster.ca or at the Hershey Centre box office during regular business hours.
