Kitchener Rangers News Release

The Kitchener Rangers defeated the Sarnia Sting 4-1 Sunday afternoon. Ben Fanelli's first career OHL goal was the game winner, helping the Rangers to their ninth consecutive victory at The Aud.

Rookie Radek Faksa extended his most recent point streak by opening the scoring for the Rangers. The Czech-born import split the Sarnia defense and slid the puck low past Brandon Hope. Faksa has recorded at least one point in seven straight games and leads all OHL rookies with 27 points. Eric Ming and Zach Lorentz were credited with the assists on the goal at 12:01 of the first period.

Shots on goal were even at ten each through 20 minutes of play.

The Rangers would take a 2-0 lead midway through the second when Josh Sterk found Ben Fanelli alone to the right of Hope. The blueliner's first career OHL goal was also assisted by Ming, who has at least one point in four of his last five games.

Sarnia closed the gap to one with a power play goal from Reid Boucher. The New Jersey Devils prospect fired the puck past Kitchener starter Franky Palazzese for his 15th of the season. Brett Thompson and Tyler Carnevale were credited with the assists. With the helper, Thompson has recorded nine points in his last five games.

Kitchener re-gained its two-goal lead with under a minute to play in the second period. Tobias Rieder picked up the puck in the neutral zone and raced in alone, launching the puck by Hope and notching his ninth in his last six outings. The German winger leads all Rangers with 20 goals and 13 helpers this season. Ben Thomson recorded an assist on the play. The third-year power forward has recorded a point in four of his last five games and sits just two points shy of his career-high total of 17.

The Sting out-shot the Rangers 16-9 in the second period.

The Rangers continued their offensive pressure in the third. Michael Catenacci slid the puck around the right pad of Hope just 69 seconds into the period, extending the Rangers' lead to 4-1. Assisting on the captain's fifth of the season were Rieder and Julian Melchiori.

Sarnia led shots on goal 16-8 in the final frame, but Palazzese stood strong, stopping 41 of 42 shots to pick up his fifth consecutive win.

The Rangers evened the season series with the Sting at two games apiece. Kitchener improves to 17-7-1-0 this season. Sarnia has lost three straight game and sits at 15-6-1-4.
