April 24, 2006 - International Hockey League 2 (IHL 2)
Rockford IceHogs News Release
Rockford, Ill.- The United Hockey League kicked off its 2005-06 regular season awards on Monday and Rockford IceHogs rookie defenseman Matt Gens was named to the UHL's All-Rookie Team. The Baudette, Minn. native becomes the third IceHogs d-man to receive the honor.
Gens set an IceHogs record in '05-06 with a plus/minus rating of +31. The first-year defenseman helped anchor down an IceHogs blue-line that played without a veteran player for the majority of the season. Gens' rookie campaign began with an invitation to Phoenix Coyotes (NHL) rookie camp in September and the rookie received four American Hockey League call-ups.
Offensively, Gens notched 5g-18a-23pts this season in 71 games with Rockford. His point totals were tied for second most on the IceHogs amongst all defenseman. In the AHL, Gens skated in five games with the IceHogs AHL affiliate Milwaukee Admirals.
The St. Cloud State grad skated four seasons prior to coming to the IceHogs last fall. With St. Cloud State, Gens played in 149 games and scored 16g-48a-64pts. Gens joins current IceHogs defenseman Steve Pelletier and former d-man Nick Angel as the only three defenseman in team history to receive the All-Rookie Team honor.
Other skaters named to the UHL's All-Rookie Team include forwards Ryan Keller and David Wrigley from the Muskegon Fury and Jason Deitch of the Kalamazoo Wings, defenseman Donny Grover from the Danbury Trashers and goaltender Joel Martin from Kalamazoo.
Next Home Game: Friday, April 28 vs. Fort Wayne Komets (if necessary). The puck drops at 7:30 p.m. Game Five of the Hogs Komets series returns to Rockford if the Komets win either Game Three or Four in Fort Wayne. For tickets call (815) 968-5222.
