Oshawa Generals News Release

Kingston, Ontario - The Generals brought the curtain down on 2011 in style Friday night. Oshawa defeated Kingston 5-2 before a crowd of 2,509 at the K-Rock Centre in Kingston. The Generals power play caught fire early and accounted for 4 of Oshawa's 5 goals, 3 came in the first period. Kyle Hope and Lucas Lessio each had 2 goals and 1 assist for 3 point nights. Andy Andreoff had 3 helpers and Christian Thomas had a multi-point evening in the victory.

In the first period, the Generals scored a buffet of goals from the point. All 3 came with the man advantage.

Right from the opening faceoff, Oshawa set a frenetic pace that threw Kingston defenders back on their heels. The Frontenacs panicked, and the end result was 5 straight Oshawa power plays.

With Christian Thomas and Kyle Hope manning the points, the Generals teed off on Kingston goaltender, Igor Bobcov. Bobcov did his best to get his 6'6" frame in front of the puck, but he was in the middle of a shooting gallery.

Hope struck just 93 seconds in when he blistered a slap-shot by Bobcov glove-side. Andy Andreoff opened up the shooting lane by faking shot before dishing the puck off to Hope at the point. The game had barely even started and the Generals were up 1-0.

Oshawa's prolific power play pounced again at 6:23. This time, it was Thomas rocketing a one-timer off the right post and in. Thomas stepped into a pass from Andy Andreoff who picked up his second helper making it 2-0 Gens.

Thomas and Hope hooked up for Hope's second goal of the game at the 8 minute mark. The two played catch at the blue line before Hope uncorked a howitzer that had Oshawa running away with a 3-0 lead.

Kingston salvaged some degree of hope when ex-General, Cody Alcock, buried a power play marker of his own, a wrist shot that got up in a hurry and sailed over the left shoulder of Generals starting goaltender, Daniel Altshuller. The Fronts had life, but after 1, it was the Generals who found themselves on the right end of a 3-1 score.

Bobcov bounced back from his shell shock to have a strong second period and prevented the Generals from adding to their lead. His biggest tests came in the form of Lucas Lessio who broke in not once but twice, and both times, Bobcov was equal to the task and turned #38 away empty handed.

The Frontenacs had a huge opportunity to climb back into the game when their captain, Tyler Brown, was awarded a penalty shot at 11:41 of the second. Brown changed speeds as he skated in on goal and attempted to undress Altshuller with a quick deke. Oshawa's goaltender didn't bite and Brown's attempt got stuffed by Altshuller's pads. With 2 periods in the books, the Generals were just 20 minutes away from capturing a critical 2 points on the road.

The Bobcov/Lessio battle continued in the third. Early in the frame, Bobcov showed defiance robbing Lessio with a brilliant glove hand. Bobcov's triumph was short lived.

Lessio broke the Kingston goaltender at 6:50 in Brett Hull fashion: he dropped to one knee and wired a wrist shot that singed the twine of the net. If Lessio was Hull, then Andreoff was auditioning for the role of Adam Oates (he picked up his third assist of the night on the play).

Lessio's hot hand lit the lamp a second time at 13:59 just 4 seconds into a Generals power play. The goal was a carbon copy of the first one and the final nail in a 5-2 Generals win.

Kyle Hope and Christian Thomas picked up first and second star selections.

The Generals outshot the Frontenacs 37-29. Altshuller picked up his second consecutive win and made 27 stops on the night.

Oshawa looks to ring in the new year with a win at home this New Year's Day, Sunday January 1st, vs. the Owen Sound Attack at the General Motors Centre. Start time is 2:05 PM, and the Generals will continue their 75th Anniversary Celebrations by honouring many who have made a difference over the years in the Generals community. Prominent billets, past and present, will be recognized, and among those being honoured is Booster Club President, Karon Shepperdson. There will also be 75 prizes given out, including a game worn 75th Anniversary jersey and gloves.
