Niagara IceDogs News Release

The Niagara IceDogs picked up their fourth straight win, defeating the Mississauga St. Michael's Majors 6-5 in a shootout Friday night in Mississauga.

The IceDogs got off to a quick start as Joel Wigle would find the back of the net only 15 seconds in to make it 1-0 for the visitors. Brock Beukeboom would then stretch the lead with a powerplay marker late in the period making it 2-0 Niagara after one. The shots after one were 12-4 in favour of the IceDogs.

The second period would see the IceDogs continue their strong play, stretching the lead to 4-0 on goals from Carter Verhaeghe and a shorthanded marker by Alex Friesen. Mississauga would strike back with two goals of their own, including one on the powerplay, before Andrew Agozzino picked up the IceDogs second shorthanded goal of the period on a great individual effort to make it 5-2 IceDogs after 40 minutes.

With a three goal lead headed into the third things looked good for the IceDogs, but some bad luck and a little penalty trouble saw Mississauga come storming back to tie things at 5-5, the fifth goal coming with the extra attacker and only 32 seconds remaining.

Overtime would solve nothing, sending the IceDogs to their fourth shootout of the season. The fourth time would prove lucky for the IceDogs as Agozzino picked up the only goal of the shootout, giving Niagara their first shootout victory of the season.

Final shots in the game were 33-27 in favour of the IceDogs.

The IceDogs close out their weekend and 2011 back in Niagara tomorrow night as they play host to the Guelph Storm for a special 6pm start. Single seats and standing room still remain and fans coming to the game are encouraged to bring their skates and join the players for a postgame skate!
