Kitchener Rangers News Release

The Kitchener Rangers defeated the Owen Sound Attack 4-1 in their first game on home ice after the holiday break. Zach Lorentz led the way with two goals.

The Rangers were strong out of the gate against their Midwest Division rivals during the first three minutes of the game, throwing everything they could offensively at Attack goaltender Jordan Binnington. Kitchener outshot Owen Sound 7-2 in that span with two of the best chances going to Tobias Rieder. Rieder, in his second game back after the Division 1 U-20 Championship, found himself in behind the defense and all alone with Binnington twice on his first shift, but was unable to put the Rangers ahead.

Things would even up on the shot clock as the first went along, but the physical play didn't stop. Brett Clampitt, Andrew Crescenzi, and even Ben Fanelli all threw big hits around on the same shift as the two teams ground out a scoreless tie through the first ten minutes.

Despite the early advantage in shots, it was Owen Sound who found the board first, when Brayden Rose bounced a puck off of Mike Halmo, and it found it's way to Daniel Catenacci. Catenacci tapped it past a sprawling Franky Palazzese for his 20th of the season and a 1-0 Attack lead.

The Rangers quickly answered back four minutes later when Matia Marcantuoni sprung Andrew Crescenzi and Zach Lorentz on a two-on-one. Crescenzi fired the puck at Binnington and Lorentz poked in the rebound to tie the game at 1-1.

Kitchener outshot the Attack 15-11 during the first period.

In the second period, the hard-working tandem of Keli Grant and Eric Ming went to work. The two kept the puck down low on the Attack and kept Binnington scrambling. Julian Melchiori's point shot beat Binnington to give the Rangers a 2-1 lead. The goal was Melchiori's second of the season.

Before the crowd had even sat down, Lorentz gave them more to cheer about. Sent in by Ryan Murphy, Lorentz flipped a backhand at Binnington that found its way through. Lorentz's 12th of the season gave the Rangers a 3-1 lead and the sophomore forward his third two-goal game of the month.

Owen Sound pressed the Rangers defense for the remainder of the period leading 13-12 in shots on goal.

From there, it was all Franky Palazzese. He would make 13 more saves in the third period and stop 36 shots on the night. Michael Catenacci would add an empty-netter to cap the 4-1 victory.

The Rangers win improves their record to 24-10-1-0. The Owen Sound Attack now have a record of 18-16-2-2.
