Oshawa Generals News Release

Tonight, the Oshawa Generals played host to the Mississauga Steelheads in a rare mid-week matchup. It was the third meeting of the season between the Eastern Conference opponents and with the season series tied 1-1 entering the game, the Generals were looking for the series advantage along with a valuable two points.

1st Period:

In the early stages of the first, there was a quick pace and a determined effort on both sides as the two teams traded chances. It was the Gens who found some sustained offensive zone pressure when Danil Antropov snapped a puck on net that squeaked passed Vella but just wide of the net. Midway through the period, after a successful penalty kill Henderson turned the puck over in the offensive zone and found Commisso just out of the box for a quick shot that just missed. Late in the first, the Gens went to the powerplay as they looked for the game's first goal. After a few near misses, it was tic-tac-goal when Antropov fed Studnicka who found Serron Noel on the backdoor for a tap-in shot to make it 1-0 for the home team. The Steelheads managed a late break in the final seconds but Keyser came up big with a great stop to keep the 1-0 lead intact heading into the second. Shots were Oshawa 14 Mississauga 8.

2nd Period:

Tempers flared at the final buzzer of the first and the two teams played four aside to open up the second period. Despite a few promising looks for the Generals, neither team was able to make the most of the open ice. At 15:20 of the second, after a good cycle down low Studnicka found Renars Krastenbergs for his 17th goal of the season putting the Gennies up 2-0. With the Steelheads searching to spark their offence, Keyser was up to the challenge making several consecutive saves to shut the door. In a race up ice, MacLean ended up finding Danil Antropov in the slot for his 15th goal of the season making it 3-0. While short-handed, Kyle MacLean capitalized on a miscue by Vella behind the net to pot his 9th goal of the season extending the good guys lead to 4-0. Looking to cut into their deficit, Mississauga wound up on a partial breakaway where Keyser absolutely robbed the Steelheads player with the left pad. However, at 5:23 of the period Nicolas Hague scored to make it 4-1. That is where the game would stand after two periods with Oshawa holding the edge in shots 25-22.

3rd Period:

A minute into the third period, the Steelheads capitalized on the man advantage to cut the Gens lead to two. Not deterred by Mississauga's quick-strike offence, the Gens continued to push the pace and tried to get the better of Ingham who came in relief of Vella in the second. However, at 8:30 of the period Owen Tippett tallied on the powerplay to put the Steelheads within one, 4-3. In a wild series of events, it appeared as though the Gens scored while on the powerplay but the play continued and went up ice where the Steelheads then scored short-handed. After a review to determine if the puck hit the back of the net, it was ruled no-goal resulting in a tie game 4-4. As time ticked down it appeared as though it was going to be last goal wins when with 1:17 remaining, Brassard found Renars Krastenbergs on a breakaway rush for his second goal of the game bringing all of Gens Nation to their feet as the home team took a 5-4 lead. On the ensuing faceoff, Mississauga gained possession and pulled their goalie. Despite a mad scramble in the final minute of play the Oshawa Generals would go on to earn their fifth straight win in a rousing 5-4 victory. Final shots were Oshawa 32 Mississauga 44.

This weekend the Generals will head to Kitchener to do battle with the Rangers on Friday, March 2nd for their final meeting of the regular season starting at 7:30 pm. On Saturday, the Gens will be in Hamilton for a divisional matchup with the Eastern Conference leading Bulldogs. Game time is set for 7:00 pm. Oshawa will be back home next Wednesday, March 7th when they take on the Kingston Frontenacs at 7:05 pm.
