Greyhounds Claim Hamilton Spectator Trophy, West Division Crown with 50th Win

The Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds are Hamilton Spectator Trophy recipients as OHL regular season champions after winning their 50th game of the season on Wednesday in Saginaw.

Rookies Ryan Roth and Joe Carroll put the Greyhounds up 2-0 before Saginaw rallied back within a goal. Taylor Raddysh and Tim Gettinger scored third period markers to give the Hounds a 4-1 edge as they skated to their third 50-win season in franchise history.

The 50-6-2-2 Greyhounds earn their fifth Hamilton Spectator Trophy following other regular season crowns in 1981, 1983, 1985 and 2015.

The Hamilton Spectator Trophy was first presented to the Ontario Hockey Association in the 1957-58 season. Winners have gone on to capture the OHL championship 24 times and the Memorial Cup 11 times. The 2017 Erie Otters hoisted the Robertson Cup last spring following their second straight regular season title while the 2009 Windsor Spitfires were the last OHL club to complete the trifecta.

Wednesday's win also gives the Greyhounds their fourth Bumbacco Trophy as West Division champions in the past five years and seventh since the trophy was first awarded in 1994-95. The award is named after former Greyhounds General Manager Angelo Bumbacco who was one of the original founders of the franchise. In addition to winning 2014, 2015 and 2017 West Division titles, the Hounds also did so in 1997, 2005 and 2008.

Prior to realignment, the Greyhounds earned the Leyden Trophy in 1981 as well as the Emms Trophy for Division titles in 1983 and 1985 prior to a memorable three year run. With teams that included eventual NHL talent in Adam Foote, Bob Boughner, Steve Sullivan and Aaron Gavey, the Hounds won Division titles from 1991-93.

The Greyhounds have won five playoff rounds over the past four seasons and, while emerging as one of the OHL's most consistent contenders, are working towards a return to their early 90's playoff success that featured two OHL Championships and a Mastercard Memorial Cup title on home ice in 1993.
