Week two of the month of February will see a lot of action between the Flint Generals and the Port Huron IceHawks as all three games for the week are between the rivals. With Port Huron perched up in the second spot in the standings, they are mostly fighting to overtake the Muskegon Lumberjacks for title of the league's best in the regular season. The Generals on the other hand are fighting for their playoff lives. Currently, they are 4 points behind Quad City and 11 points out of a playoff spot. They are 4-3-1 in their last eight games, including wins over both Muskegon and Port Huron. More importantly, 3 of the 4 wins came on the road.
Friday night kicks off the three game series with teams hitting the ice at McMorran Arena at 7:30 PM. With a 2-6-0-0 record in the season series thus far, it is no secret that the Gens have struggled against the IceHawks this season. However the last meeting between the two was at McMorran and the Generals played a great game all around and walked away with a well earned 2-1 victory. They look to pick up where they left off and get their fifth road win of the season.
Action turns to Perani Arena Saturday night for a 7:30 PM face off. The team looks forward to returning home, as the game marks the first home game for the Generals since January 25th when they beat Muskegon 4-2. The Generals have gone 1-1-0-0 since their last meeting with Port Huron while the IceHawks have gone 1-3-0-0.
Sunday the 3-in-3 series wraps up at McMorran for a 5:00 PM Matinee puck drop. The January 30th game between Flint and Port Huron was a sellout, hopefully there is a similar turnout this weekend of both Generals and 'Hawks fans.
Looking Back: Through two games against Bloomington and Dayton, the Generals racked up a respectable 7 goals. But having allowed just as many goals in one of those games, they concluded week seventeen with a 1-1-0-0 record. Wednesday they returned to Bloomington for the first time since the infamous Jan. 17th game. Up 5-1, the PrairieThunder had a stranglehold on the game by the end of the second period. But the Generals came out in the third period full of energy and determination, scoring 4 goals in a 7 minute span to bring them within 2 goals with two minutes left to play. Sebastian Dahm weathered the storm and held on to give the PT the 7-5 win.
Flint returned to action Friday in Dayton. The first 20 minutes went scoreless with both teams playing a tight game. The Gems scored first 13:19 into the second, but just.14 seconds later the Gens tied the game. Despite doubling the Gems in shots 16-8, the period ended in a 1-1 deadlock. With just under half of the final frame played, John Mori netted a shorthanded goal giving the Generals the lead which they held onto for the rest of the game. Rob Nolan got the win for the Generals, in his first game after missing four games due to a sore neck.
The Invasion Continues: Ben Boudreau and Matt Moffat paid a visit to Goodrich Middle School Monday afternoon to talk about nutrition and play floor hockey with one of the physical education classes.
Tuesday afternoon/evening Rob Nolan, Brandon Gentile, Steve Silver, Armando Scarlato and Matt Moffat spent a few hours helping out at North End Soup Kitchen. The players prepared and then served the food to those who were looking for a helping hand in a cold and snowy night.
Wednesday's Generals visit to Myers Elementary is being rescheduled, due to a snow day for the schools of Genesee County.
