Icehawks Ready For Three Games With Generals
February 10, 2010 - International Hockey League 2 (IHL 2)
Port Huron Icehawks News Release
PORT HURON, MI - The Port Huron Icehawks will get familiar with the Flint Generals this weekend, as they play their rival this Friday, Saturday and Sunday, with just the middle game taking place away from McMorran Arena.
The Icehawks have lost five of their last six games heading into the weekend series, but remain in second place in the International Hockey League, six points behind the Muskegon Lumberjacks and seven points ahead of surging Fort Wayne. Port Huron leads the season series with the Generals 6-2-0-0, though Flint won the last matchup 2-1 on January 30 in Port Huron. The Generals are currently last in the IHL, but have won two of their last three games.
The Icehawks were unable to get a regulation win last week as they beat the Quad City Mallards in a shootout before losses to the Fort Wayne Komets and the Dayton Gems. The three-game road trip was just the beginning of a February schedule in which they play eight of twelve games away from home.
The Icehawks and Mallards once again needed an overtime period and a shootout to decide a winner Wednesday night and all three Port Huron shooters scored to give the Icehawks a much-needed victory. These two teams have gone to the shootout five times this season, including every matchup at Quad City's iWireless Center.
On Friday in Fort Wayne, the Icehawks suffered their worst loss of the season when the Komets scored early and often, earning a 9-1 victory. All nine goals were given up in the first forty minutes and the 44 shots on goal were the most allowed by the Icehawks this year.
The road trip came to a close Saturday in Dayton when the struggling Icehawks fell to the Gems, 4-2. This was just the second time this season the Gems have defeated the Icehawks, who fall to 8-2-0-0 against the expansion team this year. The matchup marked Kris Vernarsky's first game since being injured in late November and also his 500th game as a professional.
Hockey Italiano: Goalie Adam Russo has been loaned to the Italian National Team to participate in the Euro Ice Hockey Challenge this weekend in Italy. Russo spent the last five seasons playing professionally in Europe, including 66 games for Italian clubs. To backup goalie Larry Sterling this weekend, the Icehawks have signed goalie Justin Grevious to a tryout.
Veteran Milestone: Kris Vernarsky became the fourth player on the Icehawks roster with at least 500 games played as a professional when he skated in Dayton on Saturday. Vernarsky joins teammates Jason Selleke and Tab Lardner, as well as Daniel Tetrault, who played his 600th game in Port Huron's last game in Dayton on January 20.
Upcoming Promotions: Friday, February 12 vs. Flint, 7:30 p.m. - Pro Wrestling Night. WWE Hall of Fame wrestler George "The Animal" Steele will drop the ceremonial first puck and sign autographs. Fans can also register to win a diamond necklace, courtesy of Alexander Fine Jewelers, just in time for Valentine's Day.
Sunday, February 14 vs. Flint, 5 p.m. - Skate With The Players. The final Skate With The Players event of the season will take place immediately following the game. Skate or walk onto the ice and get autographs from all your favorite players.
