Generals Shutout in Return to Action against IceDogs
January 7, 2022 - Ontario Hockey League (OHL)
Oshawa Generals News Release
Danil Gushchin and Liam Van Loon both scored twice as the Niagara IceDogs defeated the Oshawa Generals 5-0 on Thursday night.
IceDogs goaltender Josh Rosenzweig was spectacular in this one, stopping all 34 shots he faced for his first career OHL shutout.
This was the first game the Generals had played since December 18th due to multiple games being postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Niagara's Gushchin got the game's only goal in the first period via a giveaway from Generals rookie Calum Ritchie. Gushchin was able to skate in on a breakaway and beat Zachary Paputsakis blocker side.
Dylan Roobroeck gave the IceDogs a two-goal lead late in the second period with his second of the season.
However, in the third period, the IceDogs really put this game out of reach, as Van Loon scored twice, and Gushchin got his second of the game while killing a 5-on-3 powerplay to secure a 5-0 victory for Niagara.
Forward Cameron Butler, who made his debut for Oshawa in this game, couldn't get on the scoresheet against his former team. Butler was the captain of the IceDogs prior to being dealt to Oshawa earlier in the week for a package of draft picks.
Paputsakis did all he could to keep his team in this one, but the IceDogs kept finding ways to get chances in high danger areas. He finished the night having stopped 24 of 39 shots.
The Generals next home game will be on Sunday night versus the Sudbury Wolves, as tonight's scheduled game against Ottawa has been postponed to a later date.
