Generals Rally Late on Sunday to Beat M-Braves

JACKSON, TN - The Jackson Generals scored a run in the bottom of the eighth inning to break a 4-4 tie and evened the series with a 5-4 victory at The Ballpark at Jackson on Sunday afternoon.

The Generals (20-16) got the scoring started early on Mother's Day with a leadoff homer in the bottom of the first inning from Daniel Robertson. The 32-year-old who has played for in 116 MLB games would reach base in all five plate appearances.

Robertson added another RBI in the second inning for the Generals on a sacrifice fly to center that brought home Jose Queliz.

Trailing 2-0, the M-Braves (16-21) scored four unanswered runs to tie and take the lead over the next four innings.

Connor Lien and starting pitcher Bryse Wilson were retired to start the top of the third inning, but with two outs, Michael Reed singled and was brought home on a double to right from Luis Valenzuela.

The M-Braves tied the game at 2-2 in the fourth inning with a one-out sacrifice fly from Daniel Lockhart that scored Jonathan Morales. The run was set up by a Morales walk and double from Tyler Marlette.

Wilson worked 5.0 innings in his second Double-A start for the M-Braves, giving up two runs on three hits with three walks and two strikeouts. Wilson saw his pitch count rise in the early innings but worked a 1-2-3 fourth inning and was the benefactor of a big 6-3 double play in the fifth.

The 20-year-old Atlanta Braves prospect had a chance to be the winning pitcher as Mississippi sent eight batters to the plate in the sixth inning and scored two runs to take the lead. They did all the damage with two outs. Morales started the inning with a double and came into score on a Marlette single to give the M-Braves a 3-2 lead. Facing new pitcher Gabe Speier, Daniel Lockhart singled to place two runners on base, and Connor Lien shot a single through the left side of the infield to bring home Marlette to push the lead to 4-2.

Michael Mader relieved Wilson, but could not maintain the lead. The Generals sent eight batters to the plate in their half of the sixth to tie the game back up at 4-4.

Mississippi reliever Adam McCreery (L, 0-3) relieved Mader and tossed a scoreless seventh inning, but surrendered the go-ahead run in the eighth. With two runners on and two outs, Kevin Medrano beat the shift on the left side of the infield and plated Queliz to score the winning run to make it 5-4.

The Braves had a chance to tie the game in the ninth inning as Reed drew a one-out walk and Valenzuela singled. Alay Lago grounded into a fielders choice putting runners at the corners, but Tyler Neslony lined out to Jackson shortstop Galli Cribbs to end the game.

Jackson reliever Joel Payamps (W, 3-0) picked up the win with 2.0 scoreless innings, and Kirby Bellow (S, 1) earned his first save.

The M-Braves and Generals will continue their five-game series on Monday with a 6:05 pm (CT) first pitch. RHP RHP Touki Toussaint (2-1, 3.77) will make the start for the Braves against RHP Taylor Widener (0-2, 3.77) for the Generals. Toussaint and Widener are tied for the league-lead with 48 strikeouts each. Fans can listen to all M-Braves games for free on 103.9 WYAB or the free TuneIn Radio App.

The M-Braves will return home to Trustmark Park on Wednesday, May 23 for a five-game series against the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp. The game will feature two promotions in AMR First Responders Wednesday presented by AMR (All First Responders/Emergency Response personnel, including law enforcement and firefighters, may purchase a $7 ticket in all seating areas, excluding Suite Level, when presenting ID. Excluding July 4) and Strike Out Hunger presented by the Mississippi Food Network (Fans who bring a canned food item to the Trustmark Park Box Office will receive a voucher for one $3 Field Level ticket).
