Brampton Steelheads News Release
Mississauga, ON - The Mississauga Steelheads hosted the Oshawa Generals Wednesday night for their first of three home games this week. Coming into tonight's game, the Steelheads hoped to improve their position for the postseason while the Gens looked to capture the eighth and final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference. It was a hard fought battle, but the Gens edged the Steelheads 4-3 in overtime, guaranteeing themselves a tie-breaker game (if necessary) against the Hamilton Bulldogs for the final playoff spot.
The Steelheads struck first just after the 15-minute mark of the opening frame when Jason Smith found himself in alone on Generals' goaltender, Jeremy Brodeur. Smith beat Brodeur blocker side with his eighth of the season to give Mississauga the early 1-0 lead. Mason Marchment and Sean Day picked up the assists on the goal. The Generals would even the score at 15:18, capitalizing on the first power play of the game as Mitchell Vande Sompel fired a shot from the point by a screened Jack Flinn. The game remained tied at one heading into the first intermission.
The second period saw end-to-end action as both teams fought for the go ahead goal. Everett Clark would restore the Steelheads' lead at 18:52 of the middle frame, beating an Oshawa defender and tucking the puck past Brodeur. Josh Burnside and Damian Bourne assisted on Clark's 15th of the season as the Steelheads held a 2-1 lead heading into the third.
The Generals didn't waste any time evening things up again as Kyle MacLean fired a shot over Flinn's shoulder just 1:34 into the final frame. Owen Tippett restored the Steelheads' lead at 5:07, dancing through the Generals' zone and burying his own rebound. Burnside picked up his second assist of the night on Tippett's 15th of the season. The Generals capitalized on their third power play opportunity of the night at 11:39 to even the score 3-3 and force the game into extra time. With 38 seconds left in the overtime period, Domenic Commisso tipped home a Riley Stillman point shot to seal a 4-3 victory for the Gens.
