Taking on the Arizona Sundogs for the first time ever, the Gems were in a dog fight all the way in this one, beginning in the second period when all of the scoring started happening. The story of this game was the penalties, between the two teams there were 19 power plays and 45 penalty minutes. The Gems would prevail 4-3 in a shootout but prior to earning the victory, gave up the 3-2 lead with 6.3 seconds remaining when Arizona tied the game on the power play to force overtime. The Gems did not register a shot on goal in the extra session and the Sundogs only managed two routine shots for goaltender Derek MacIntyre to push aside. Corey Couturier and Tim Hartung scored in the shootout and MacIntyre stopped four out of five shooters in the shootout. Each team converted two power play goals (Dayton 2-8, Arizona 2-11) and MacIntyre would make it two nights in-a-row stopping 30 or more shots in net.
