Louisiana IceGators News Release
Lafayette, LA- Playing the final game of a five game homestand, the Louisiana IceGators gave up three goals in record setting fashion en route to a 6-2 Everblades win, Wednesday night in the Cajundome.
The 1st period was a see-saw battle with each team scoring twice. Jade Galbraith scored his 11th of the year to open the scoring at 2:43. From the left circle, Galbraith scored the power play goal with top shelf slap shot past Tyler MacKay. The Everblades answered on a Reggie Berg breakaway at 5:00, a set play resulted in Berg scoring his 11th of the year on a back hand move around Kyle Kettles. Louisiana took the lead back at 7:19 when a Roger Leonard dump in from the red line deflected at the blue line and wound up on the stick of Shawn Skiehar. The veteran winger dashed in from the right side and lifted another top shelf goal, this time a backhander, for his 4th of the year. Florida answered one more time, as Kris Vernansky scored his 11th of the year, a snapshot from the slot, to tie the game at 2-2 after the first 20 minutes.
The story of the second period can be summed up in a 1:01 segment as the Blades scored three goals during that time frame to take a 5-2 lead. At 7:12, Vernansky scored his 2nd of the game and 12th of the season on a wraparound to give Florida the lead for the first time in the game. Just 37 seconds later, Greg Hornby scored his first professional goal on a one-timer to make the score 4-2. Twenty four seconds elapsed before the Blades struck again. This time, Berg lit the lamp on a back hander from the slot, his 2nd of the game and 13th of the year, to make the score 5-2. Three goals scored against the Gators in 1:01 shattered the old record for fastest three goals, set by Pensacola in 1999.
The only goal in the 3rd period belonged to Florida, a shorthanded breakaway by Damian Surma, his 25th of the season at 10:43.With the loss, Louisiana's record is now 19-29-6, 44 points and 5th place in the South. The Gators were outshot by Florida 27-25. Power plays were 1-3 for the Gators and 0-5 for the Blades.
The next game for Louisiana will be this Saturday night, March 5, when the Gators travel to Estero , Florida to face the Everblades for the 3rd game in a row.
