Gastonia's Furious Rally Topples Blowfish
July 8, 2015 - Coastal Plain League (Coastal Plain)
Lexington County Blowfish News Release
Gastonia, N.C. (July 7, 2015) -- The Gastonia Grizzlies showed their West Division-leading form in a 12-8 victory over the Lexington County Blowfish on Tuesday night.
The Grizzlies batted around and then some in the seventh inning, racking off nine runs on four hits and an error. Before that nightmarish inning, the Blowfish held a 7-3 lead. Gastonia's CPL All-Star Sammy Taormina's bases-clearing, pinch-hit double dealt the most damage in the inning, as he slammed a 3-1 pitch down the right field line into the corner.
The Blowfish responded once more after that decisive blow, but ultimately fell short, scoring one run in the final two innings.
Gastonia struck first in the game, but the Blowfish staged a rally of their own during the third inning. Bennette Hill (Shelton State) continued his red-hot streak, singling home Danny Edgeworth (Mercer University). Then, as the Blowfish loaded the bases, Trevor Bradley (USC-Aiken) knocked a hot shot up the middle that was mishandled, clearing the bases.
Hill finished the night 3-for-4, scoring a run, and driving in two. He is now 7 for his last 14, scoring six runs, and driving in four more in his last three games.
It didn't take long for the Blowfish to knock out starter David Sauer. Critical late-inning relief from Brandon Donahue, Blake Drew, and most importantly, Jimmy Doolittle, shut the door.
Lexington County added one run in the sixth inning thanks to an RBI single by Tyler Lancaster (Spartanburg Methodist) that scored newcomer Reed Rohlman (Clemson), and two more runs in the seventh in part to a fielder's choice from Howard Joe (Mercer University) and a wild pitch that would later score Joe.
The Blowfish received their second-straight quality start. Heath Holder (Georgia) pitched six innings of three-run ball, striking out seven batters. Holder picked off Gastonia baserunners on two occasions. He snap-tossed to first to pick off Blake Kennedy in the first inning, and once more to get Wiley Jackson in the fifth.
The Blowfish now stand at 2-2 in the second half of the season, having scored 31 runs in the past three games.
Lexington County's journey continues at Martinsville to take on the Mustangs on Wednesday. Catch all the action on Z93.1 FM The Lake starting at 7:00 p.m.
The Blowfish will return home on Friday, July 10 for a matchup with the SwampDogs. Tickets for Princess Night, which will include a Prince and Princess Parade and postgame fireworks, are still available by calling the box office at 803-254-FISH, online at blowfishbaseball.com, and at Blowfish on Main (101 East Main Street in Lexington, S.C.)
