Fayetteville SwampDogs News Release

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. - Behind a great pitching performance from Will Bice (Fr./Kennesaw State), the Fayetteville SwampDogs defeated the Catawba Valley Stars 5-3 in a 7-inning, weather-shortened affair Wednesday night at J.P. Riddle Stadium.

The SwampDogs got the scoring started in the bottom of the second inning when C.J. Needam (Jr./Mount Olive) collected an infield single and advanced to second on a wild pitch by Jeremy Coburn. Two batters later Tanner Woods (Soph./Chowan) laid down a perfect squeeze bunt to score Needam and put the 'Dogs ahead.

In the third inning, the SwampDogs got a two out double from Jimmy Faul (Jr./Louisville), who attempted to steal third, and when the throw from catcher Chris Brown sailed into left field, scampered home to make it 2-0.

The Stars would get all their offense in the fifth inning, when Bice allowed three runs, though only one was earned.

Bice was the winner for the SwampDogs, pitching five innings allowing the runs on five hits, walking two and striking out six.

As he left with a 3-2 deficit, the SwampDogs offense picked him up the win in the bottom of the fifth by countering with a three-spot of their own against Coburn.

Ryan Stamler pitched the final two innings of the game to earn the save.

The SwampDogs (14-20) complete their home stand on Thursday on against the Petersburg Generals on the 11th Annual Family Fun Night and Fun-Go Bobblehead giveaway powered by Bob 96.5 FM. The first 500 fans will receive the one-of-a-kind 2015 Fun-Go Bobblehead. For tickets call 910-426-5900.
