Oshawa Generals News Release
Oshawa, Ontario - November 7th, 2011 - The Oshawa Generals are pleased to announce the hiring of former Columbus Blue Jackets Assistant Coach Gary Agnew. With Agnew joining the organization, Chris DePiero will continue to focus on his position as General Manager.
Agnew played collegiate hockey with the University of New Brunswick for four years, then spent a season each in the American Hockey League (AHL) and International Hockey League. He graduated from the University of Western Ontario with a Masters' Degree in Coaching.
Agnew's first Head Coaching position was with the London Knights of the Ontario Hockey League (OHL), where he spent four years and was awarded the Matt Leydon Trophy as the OHL Coach of the Year. He then left the Knight and spent three years with the Frontenacs, leading them to their only division title. Agnew returned to the Knights for three more years, from 1997 to 2000, and won his second Matt Leydon Trophy.
After ten years in the OHL, Agnew moved on to become the Head Coach of the Syracuse Crunch of the AHL. Agnew helped the Crunch set numerous franchise records including wins (47) and points (102).
Agnew was the Assistant Coach of the National Hockey League's Columbus Blue Jackets from 2006 to 2010, and served a brief period as Interim Head Coach. During his tenure with the team, the Blue Jackets made their first and only playoff appearance in the team's short history.
A Niagara Falls, Ontario native, Gary Agnew is a welcome addition to the Oshawa Generals family and is excited for the opportunity. "I'm thrilled to be a part of this tremendous organization. The Oshawa Generals have a long and distinguished history and I'm confident that we can add to that winning tradition this year. We have a very strong team and I looked forward to working with everyone here."
