Gann Smothers West Virginia in First Start
August 29, 2021 - Atlantic League (AtL)
Lancaster Stormers News Release
Cameron Gann's first Atlantic League start went well beyond solid. It was dominating.
The right-hander struck out 11 in five shutout innings as the Lancaster Barnstormers took the finale of a three-game series from the West Virginia Power, 11-1, Sunday afternoon at Clipper Magazine Stadium.
Gann (1-0) yielded three hits, walked one and hit two. Only five balls hit in fair territory against him with two foul pop ups recording two of the other four outs. The Texas native got all three outs on strikes in the second and fourth innings.
His only difficulty came in the fifth as Gann appeared to begin to fade. Yovan Gonzalez reached him for a one-out single to right, and Nate Easley, the only better he did not whiff, lined a single to left. Connor Myers was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Gann fell behind pinch hitter Edwin Espinal, 3-1, but roared back to strike him out for #11. Alberto Callaspo fouled out to end the threat.
Lancaster had built a 5-0 lead behind Gann. Spot starter Max Povse (1-1) walked Cleuluis Rondon to open the third, and Rondon scored on a long double to right center by Caleb Gindl.
In the fourth, Trayvon Robinson drew a walk from Max Tannenbaum, and LeDarious Clark followed with a single. After Anderson De La Rosa fouled out, Nick Shumpert drove a three-run homer to right center, his first long ball in the Atlantic League. Two batters later, Gindl also connected for his 24th of the season.
Olmo Rosario homered off Brent Teller in the sixth to spoil the combined shutout effort. Ben Wanger, Donald Goodson and Tyler LaPorte finished off the afternoon. Lancaster pitching finished with a season-high 16 strikeouts.
Lancaster iced the game with four runs in the seventh, two on a double by De La Rosa.
The Barnstormers travel to Southern Maryland to open a three-game series against the division leading Blue Crabs on Tuesday evening. Zach Smith (1-2) will make the start for the Barnstormers. Fans may tune into the YouTube Channel, beginning at 6:25.
NOTES: Kelly Dugan extended his hitting streak to 14 games with an RBI single in the seventh...He and Gindl are tied for the club RBI lead at 65...Gindl now has 46 extra base hits on the year...The Barnstormers collected 34 hits and scored 23 runs in the three-game series...Lancaster won the season series, 8-4.
