Madison Mallards News Release

MADISON, WI - June 24, 2011. The Madison Mallards will hit the road and travel to La Crosse in game two of a three-game series against the Loggers at 7:05 p.m. Friday night.

The home-away-home series is part of what makes the Northwoods League unique, and will present quite the challenge for the Mallards.

After winning 3-2 Thursday, the Mallards (14-8) will go to Copeland Park, where they lost for the first time this season 8-4 on June 5th after a team-record 4-0 start. Despite a record of 8-13, La Crosse is playing .500 ball at home.

Jerad Grundy (Heartland Community College) will take the ball for the Mallards in his first start of the season. Thus far, Grundy has struggled, compiling an ERA of 12.91 in five relief appearances. The lefty from Johnsburg, Illinois also has eight strikeouts in 7.2 innings pitched, and the team is 1-4 in games in which Grundy has pitched.

On the hill for the Loggers will be Brando Tessar (Oregon). Tessar has been impressive for La Crosse, going 2-0 in his first two starts. He has pitched seven innings and allowed two runs in both of his previous starts. In the 14 total innings he has pitched this season, he has allowed only ten hits, three walks and has struck out ten batters.

Both offenses will also look to get going, after combining for only nine hits a night ago. Jordan Owen (Tennessee - Martin) and Nate Theunissen (Central Michigan) will lead the Mallards' offense into play, whereas Mike Reeves (Florida Gulf Coast) and Corey Lavier (San Diego) serve as the catalysts for the Loggers.

Defense also struggled Thursday, as there were almost as many errors (7) as there were hits (9). There were also a combined seven passed balls and wild pitches.

Following Friday's game two, both teams will return to Madison for the series finale on Saturday at 6:05 p.m.

In the News

The Mallards activated pitcher Tony Bryant (Oregon State) Friday, and Bryant will be able to see game action against the Loggers. This spring, Bryant was a dominating force for the Beavers, making all 28 of his appearances out of the bullpen. In 47.1 innings pitched, he walked 11 and struck out 40, earning a 3-2 record and a 1.52 ERA. He also led the team with 12 saves.

In order to clear room on the roster, Madison waived catcher Jumpy Garcia (Texas A&M - Corpus Christi).
