Tulsa Oilers News Release
Tulsa, Okla. - Tulsa Oilers Football, proud member of the IFL, heads to Des Moines, Iowa, in search of their first victory in franchise history.
LAST TIME OUT The Oilers hosted the Steamwheelers in their first home game in franchise history. Quad City found the first 13 points of the game with two touchdown passes from E.J. Hilliard, but it was the Oilers who blocked the extra point attempt and returned it for two points making the game 13-2 Steamwheelers with 14:20 left in the second quarter. Jeremy Reynolds for Tulsa would follow up with a 43-yard field goal with 11:46 left in the second to make it 13-5 Quad City. Hilliard, followed up with a one-yard score of his own, making the game 20-5 with 7:56 left in the half. Montero Dubose would score his first touchdown for Tulsa with a 25-yard touchdown reception with 6:47 left in the second quarter. Reynolds would add two more field goals for Tulsa, and Joshua Crockett would pick up a touchdown himself after scores were traded to end the half at a score of 40-21 Quad City. Tulsa and Quad City would trade touchdowns to start the second half, the first coming from Harrington of Quad City with a 10-yard rush, followed by Tulsa's Bobby Froehlich with a one-yard touchdown run to make it 47-27 with 10:02 left in the third quarter. Carrigan for the Steamwheelers would respond with a 17-yard touchdown catch to crank the score up to 54-27. Reynolds would hit a 41-yard field goal with 4:28 left in the third quarter to make it 54-30 Quad City. Jackson for the Steamwheelers would return an interception for a touchdown for 49 yards to make the score 60-30 to open the scoring in the fourth with 14:30 left in the game. Tulsa's Tyler Jones would score his first touchdown of the season via a 7-yard touchdown reception in the back right corner of the end zone to bring the score line to 61-36. Tulsa went back-to-back on scoring drives, with another touchdown reception by Crockett to make it 61-42. Quad City wins with a final score of 68-42.
FOCUS AHEAD Tulsa looks to alter the QB position entering this week. After releasing both quarterbacks on the roster, head coach Marvin Jones added two new faces to the position in the likes of Damion May and Vincent Espinoza. Both QB's have IFL experience and Oilers fans are already familiar with May, having played against Tulsa just a week ago in the home opener vs. Quad City. The defensive front also sees an addition with the signing of Tyarise Stevenson, the former Tulsa Golden Hurricane and former NFL contracted rookie. Justin Hobbs, former Tulsa Golden Hurricane, has been released from the STIR list but is inactive this week. Stevenson is expected to see playing time immediately this week, and OC Steven Perdue will be looking to evaluate the QB position carefully.
HOW TO "STORM" THE BARNIowa is desperate...but so is Tulsa. With both teams looking for their first win, the start of the game becomes even more important. Both teams have put up very similar numbers on offense, but the personnel for Tulsa has changed, this could be the biggest x-factor in the matchup. Iowa is hosting the Oilers for their home opener, taking the crowd out of the equation is key, but you only have a small window to do so, it must be early. Barnstormers' QB Zach Reader has thrown four interceptions this season, forcing him to make mistakes is possible and the Oilers now have more of a threat up front with the addition of Stevenson on defense. Tulsa will need to prove their defense is improving as they have taken steps backward lately.
Tulsa will travel on the road to face the Iowa Barnstormers on April 22 at 7:05 p.m. Tulsa's next home game will be April 29against the Arizona Rattlers, kickoff is set for 7:05 p.m.
