Game Preview: Storm Forecasted for Only Visit of the Season at 6:05pm Tonight
December 15, 2019 - Ontario Hockey League (OHL)
Oshawa Generals News Release
Guelph is coming off of a 6-1 loss to the Kitchener Rangers, and your Generals are coming off of a hard fought 3-2 loss to the Peterborough Petes. One team will return to their winning ways after tonight's game.
The Storm will be missing starting goalie Nico Daws who is away at Canada's World Junior camp. Daws has far and away been the best goaltender - statistically - in the OHL this season. Daws has a 0.939 save percentage through 20 games this season - which is unheard of in Canadian junior hockey. Owen Bennett has taken over the starting duties in Daws' absence, and has won two of his three starts since, with an 0.897 save percentage.
Home Depot is running a Mystery Puck at tonight's game. Fans can go to the Home Depot table on the concourse behind Section 116 and purchase a signed puck for $5.
Any monies raised will be going towards the John Howard Society. The person who purchases the puck signed in gold will win a $100 gift card to Home Depot.
Players to Watch; Oshawa Ty Tullio - Tullio has been on fire the past four games posting two goals and seven points. Tullio has a high skill game, but has excelled at getting into the dirty areas. While his shot is lethal, Tullio's playmaking is just as dangerous. Tullio has a way of controlling the puck and drawing defenders to him, allowing his teammates to gain key positioning in the attacking zone. That was no better exemplified than in last game when he grabbed the puck on the powerplay. He took his time moving around the perimeter of the Petes' zone and bided his time before sending a hard pass to Serron Noel in the crease who redirected a goal. Tullio has grown a lot this season in anticipation of being selected in the upcoming NHL draft.
Giovanni Vallati - The fourth year OHL veteran has been a steady presence on the Generals blueline this season. While his points per game, 0.48, is down from his career high last season, 0.71, Vallati has been firing more shots on goal this season than at any point in his career, 1.67 per game over last season's 1.54. If Vallati continues to fire, expect them to start to go in. Vallati's defensive game has also improved. He's seen a ton of time on the short handed unit and has been taking on a mentorship role helping younger players find their place and positioning throughout games.
Players to Watch; Guelph Pavel Gogolev - Gogolev has been a scoring machine since being traded from the Petes to the Storm last season. Gogolev has scored nine goals in his last five games and currently sits in fourth in league goal scoring with 23 goals in his first 30 games. The Moscow-born forward has found strong chemistry with 2018 Montreal Canadiens draft pick Cam Hillis. The duo are holding a McDavid-Drasaitl-esque points lead over the rest of their teammates, Hillis having 24 points more than third-place Keegan Stevenson who has 20 points total.
